This game is pretty hard and unforgiving, especially when continuing sends you all the way back to the start of the level. But there's a way to finish it without much fuss:

In the game settings, switch the difficulty to "Easy." This will give you more lives. Plug in a second controller and hit start for both players. As long as one of the players is alive, when the other loses his last life and needs to continue, he'll join back in at the same spot with the other player.

Just make sure both players don't run out of lives at the same time and you'll avoid having to restart a level from the beginning.

A couple tips:
The overhead flying levels auto-scroll, so you don't need to worry about the second controller except to hit "start" to continue. Keep both players to the far right or left edges of the screen to avoid getting sucked into the statue mouths and having to play "Danger" levels.
In the side-scrolling boss levels you'll need to use both controllers to advance each player to the right. Just take turns moving them. The boss fights aren't challenging at all, and you can practically sleepwalk through the game.

*Note, you can probably boost this online with another live player; this guide is for people attempting to play solo.
