How to unlock the Hallowed Be Thy Name achievement

This is a time consuming achievement.

First off, for details on what the Hallow is, and how you can spread it, refer to http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Terraria_Wiki.

DO THIS ON A "SMALL" SIZE MAP

Personally, I'm not sure this achievement is obtainable simply by trying to spread the Hallow to all areas of the world as it exists when you first generate a map. Simply put, it doesn't seem like there's enough land to Hallow in the world. By the time I'd hallowed just about everything above and underground - save for some of the corruption - I was at about 25-30% Hallowed. So to get the achievement, I focused on adding land to the world and then Hallowing that. The easiest way to do this, in my opinion, is to drop sand.

The most tedious but easy way of dropping a great deal of sand I found was to build a sky bridge made of stone, about halfway up from the surface of the world. Not too many wyverns spawn from this height. I built my bridge from the centre of the world, where you spawn, to the far right ocean. It helps to build a second stone bridge just over your head, making a tunnel, to protect yourself from the multitude of harpies that like to spawn. I filled my inventory with sand, and using the "detailed" cursor mode - the one that lets you pinpoint the exact square you want to manipulate - I tried to attach sand to the bottom of my stone sky bridge. When you do this, the sand falls all the way down to the surface of the world. By holding down RT, you'll rapidly drop sand until you reach your sky bridge. Then, move on to the next adjacent square and repeat. The focus here is to add more land to the world that can be Hallowed, and this is just the most "hands free" method of doing it I think. I only recommend doing this once you've Hallowed everything else that you can in your world, so you don't waste time.

Now, I did most of this with a friend. Between the two of us, we dropped close to 150,000 blocks of sand. This took around 10-15 hours I'd estimate. We had to dupe a fair amount of sand to get that much. The method for this is simple... host a game and invite your friend in. Make sure he or she has some sand in their inventory. Now, have them place the sand in a chest. Make sure they disable their Autosave in the Menu. Once they've placed the sand in the chest, and disabled Autosave, have them quit your game and rejoin. When they rejoin, the sand they left in your chest will still be there, but since they shut off their Autosave, the sand will ALSO be back in their inventory. Using this method, you can quickly fill dozens of chests with sand. It's the only practical way of doing this.

For the record, when the achievement had popped, we had Hallowed from the centre of the map ALLLLL the way to the right side ocean, and from the centre of the map about halfway to the left side ocean.. so it took a lot of sand dropping. ;-)

yossarianoHaving just unlocked this I'll add a couple of points to this solution.

    1. You can double the speed at which you drop sand blocks by buying the Brick Layer accessory from the Travelling Merchant. This makes a HUGE difference to the time needed.

    2. On a smallworld I found it took somewhere between 12,000 and 14,000 Pearlsand blocks dropped for a 1% raise the hallow status. I think with all the corruption converted, and hallow spread as far as possible by natural means, the most I could achieve before dropping sand was around 35% hallow, but they may vary.

    3. The achievement seemed to pop as soon as it tipped over 50% for me, contrary what is written elsewhere.

Octobot SuperDropping sand is certainly a way to get this achievement but I don't think it's the most efficient way (barring someone just giving you the achievement). Since the game does not count blank tiles (i.e. a space with no block whatsoever) when calculating the %age, it's more efficient to get rid of non-convertable tiles (like mud, dirt, and snow) than to add more tiles (i.e. sand).

So I think the most efficient solo way would be to Clentaminate everything you can and then just go to town removing any of the useless tiles. With end-game equipment (like a Light Picksaw and the mining armor set) this is absolutely faster than dropping sand (both mathematically--you're shrinking the denominator of the %age equation rather than increasing the numerator--and for the simple fact that mining is faster than placing blocks)

    The Hallow
It is an anti-Corruption biome and can be spread by planting Hallowed Seeds or throwing Holy Water and is most effective when used to counter the spreading of Corruption. However the corruption and hallow can spread over each other still, just very slowly.

The Hallow can be spread above ground with Pearlstone Blocks, Pearlsand, Holy Water, or with Hallowed Seeds.

The rules for spreading The Hallow are as follows:

Pearlstone and Pearlsand Blocks will spread The Hallow to adjacent Stone, Sand, and Grass blocks (Pearlstone will not spread The Hallow to dirt blocks without Grass growing on them). When planted, Hallowed Seeds will spread The Hallow to adjacent Dirt, Stone, Sand, and Grass blocks.

The Hallow cannot spread to Mud Blocks or snow blocks. Hallow will not spread through gaps in the environment that are three or more blocks across.
Hallow will not spread through synthetic blocks (i.e. materials such as Gray Brick)

Vines growing from hallowed ground can spread The Hallow through proximity.
The Hallow can be planted in a world where the Wall of Flesh has not been killed but it won't spread through Sand and Stone. It will spread the hallow grass over default grass, however.

If you want to get rid of the Corruption (after beating the Wall of Flesh of course) an easy way would be to spread the hallow there with hallow seeds, some holy water or by placing different Hallow blocks. You can use Holy Water in a world where there is no hallow, and it spawns it, though it is slower.

    Items needed

    Holy Water

Tooltip Spreads the Hallow to some blocks
    Crafting- Makes 55
    Crafted With
    Pixie Dust
    1 Bottled Water
    1 Hallowed Seeds

Holy Water is a thrown item that transforms the blocks it hits into Hallow. A more practical use is removing Corruption. Holy water is an effective method of removing the Corruption, arguably more so than Purification Powder because the latter reverts corruption to neutral stone/grass/sand, which will shortly become corrupt again, especially when playing in Hard Mode.

Holy water on the other hand Hallows whatever it touches, meaning these areas will stay cleansed for a much longer period of time.

    Hallowed Seeds

    Information
    Purchase From Dryad
Purchase During After defeating Wall of Flesh
    Material In Holy Water

Hallowed Seeds are seeds that spread the Hallow. Hallowed Seeds can be placed on Dirt Blocks. They can also be brought onto worlds in which hardmode has not been activated, and the hallow can be spread there as well. Because of their price tag and the fact that the Hallow can also be spread by placing Pearlstone or Pearlsand, they are best used to craft Holy Water.
Hallowed Seed is the only seed ingame which has the Golden tier (Tier 3), whilst all other seeds are only tier 1.

    Pearlstone Block

    Information
    Found In Underground Hallow
    Material In Pearlstone Brick

The Pearlstone Block is a Stone Block that has been claimed by The Hallow, and will expand The Hallow until another biome (such as the Jungle) interrupts the spread.

Pearlsand Blocks cannot be used in place of regular Sand Blocks to smelt Glass. However, it can be placed and reverted to regular sand with Vile Powder.
Pearlsand Blocks can be used as ammo in the Sandgun.

Fire Hawk DNevermind, answered my question. For anyone curious: think of the map as a giant grid. This achievement isn't for 50% of the existing world to be covered in Hallow. It's for 50% of that "grid" to be Hallowed dirt, Pearlstone, or Pearlsand.

Octobot SuperI don't think either of you are correct. The game doesn't seem to count empty space in the total. I sprayed everything I could on my map and was at 42%. I then proceeded to clear out an absolutely enormous swathe of snow (which counts against the hallowing since it cannot be hallowed) and my percentage went up 1 point. I even saved and quit and reloaded before checking each time because I know the Dryad isn't always up to date with the percentages. I'm going to keep clearing dirt and mud to increase my %age since it's faster than placing sand.

Just wanted to clear this up since people still might be trying this solo and given the ridiculous time investment it's good to have correct info. Of course, I could always be wrong but my testing suggests otherwise.

EDIT: So yeah, I just unlocked the achievement by clearing blocks and not placing or hallowing any existing blocks. I did this exclusively from 46% to 50%.

    QUICK SOLUTION
    *** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

I will assume you are going for this after completing all other achievements and have exceptional gear and all NPCs. See my other solutions for hints on crafting stations, getting NPCs, slaying bosses, etc. I will also assume you know how to duplicate (if not see below).

The achievement requires you cover 50% of the world in Hallow/Corrupt blocks. Mud, Snow, Ash, Open Sky, etc. cannot be turned Hallow/Corrupt. The only blocks that can be Hallow/Corrupt are Dirt, Stone, and Sand! The Hallow and Corruption spread on their own in Hard Mode. Corruption moves slightly faster. This is the fastest and most efficient way to get this achievement.

    DUPLICATING METHOD
    *** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

    HALLOW or CORRUPT
    1. Start a new Small world if you do not have one or be prepared to terraform your current world. Grab some friends to help or be prepared to spend many hours working on this.
    2. Build a housing structure in the sky close to the initial spawn area. I suggest using bricks and make the outer walls two bricks thick. Kill any boss to get the Dryad to move in. You will need her to check on your progress.
    3. From this, build a Hellevator and a Skyvator. This is easiest by duplicating Dynamite or using Rocket IV from a Rocket Launcher to blow out a path straight down.
    4. Fall down the Hellevator and kill The Wall of Flesh to unlock Hard Mode. (Optional)Then kill a Mechanical boss to get the Steampunker to spawn so you can buy clentaminators and solution.
    5. Get a clentaminator and lots of solution (Purple for Corruption and Blue for Hallow).
    6. Drop down the Hellevator and spray to the left.
    7. Drop down the Hellevator and spray to the right.
8a. Make other shafts using the same method as the Hellevator and repeat 6 & 7 to spread the Hallow/Corruption all over under the ground. Check with the Dryad when you are finished to see how much percentage the world is Corrupt/Hallow
8b. You can dig across horizontally from the Hellevator and spray up and down, but this takes much longer.
NOTE: At this point, you can idle boost and let the Hallow/Corruption spread as far as it can reach, but bear in mind that Corruption cannot spread to Hallow or Crimson and Hallow cannot spread to Corruption or Crimson. It is also unlikely that enough will spread to get the world to 50%.
    9. Go up to the top of the world using your Skyvator and build a brick bridge across the world. Build a similar one out from the housing structure.
    10. Duplicate Pearlsand for Hallow or Ebonsand for Corruption and fill lots of chests.
    11. Drop sand from the bridge to fill in the area between the bridge across the top of the world and the lower bridge you built. Keep in mind that NPCs cannot live in the Corruption, so for Corrupting, you will want to place the sand far enough away from the building to not affect them. Pearlsand can be placed right next to or all around your NPC structure. Sand is recommended because it falls when there is nothing under it and you can hold down cn_RT to place it continuously.
    MNRussell said:
Try to purchase if possible the Brick Layer accessory from the Travelling Salesman. It doubles the speed at which you drop sand.
    12. Continue checking in with the Dryad until you get to 50% Corruption/Hallow.

This is the fastest and most efficient way to get this achievement.

If you have any notes, let me know and I will add them with credit before you vote negatively.

DaeryoonGiven the amount of area that is needed for 50%, it would be impossible to get both in one world without glitching. You are much better off building two worlds and keeping it separate. Remember you can always get this be entering someone else's world, so get some buddies and work together for efficiency.

Rory 1201I did this by myself recently and I was able to do it on one world (sort of). This is assuming you have a good chunk of time (3-4 hours) where you can leave your 360 on and running. I got my gold from killing the Golem a bunch of times (I had a bunch of Power Cells from getting the Lizard Egg), and sold most of what the Golem dropped. I put all of the money towards Dynamite and Purple/Blue Solution. You'll need ~2500-3000 Solution to "paint" the world in the color of your choice. Also have a Chlorophyte Helmet, a Shroomite Chestplate, and an Ammo Box (you place it down on the ground and "click" it to refresh the buff every 10 minutes) from the Travelling Merchant. This will give the Clentaminator a 60% chance to not use ammo.

Start a world (make sure it has Corruption and not Crimson) and follow Steps 1/2 of this guide. Bring a bunch of Dynamite onto this world and go to town, making the "elevators" described. To my understanding, mud and dirt blocks don't contribute anything toward either achievement. So get rid of all the dirt and mud that you can (although I just bothered getting rid of the dirt). Feel free to enter/leave the world if you need to buy more dynamite. When you've cleared as much of the dirt and mud as you've felt like doing, and you have all of your elevators dug out, save your game and turn auto-save off.

Going into the world again, make sure you have the ammo conservation armor and Ammo Box, ~2500-3000 Solution of your choice, and a good 6-7 stacks of stone or sand incase you need to paint some more stuff. You don't really want to save after this so you can reload the world when you're done with your first achievement.

If you're doing the Hallow first, you should go spray the Corruption almost entirely so it doesn't spread. Then kill the Wall of Flesh. You'll get a chunk of Hallow, and a chunk of Corruption in your underground. You should be able to see exactly where they are if your elevators are close together on the map. Immediatley go "paint" the one that you're not doing first so it doesn't spread, then just follow steps 5-8 on the guide. I didn't have to place many extra blocks to get the achievement to pop. The process should take 3-4 hours, and when you're done, exit the world without saving. Now, your world is still set up for the other achievement! If money is an issue, you can sell the solution you're done with to get some money for the other kind.

Hopefully this saves someone a bit of time!

Octobot SuperCan't you just paint over whatever you painted first? That is, do all the annoying terraforming (adding / removing blocks), paint everything hallow, get the achievement, and then paint corruption over all the hallow? That way you don't have to leave your xbox on for 3-4 hours.

Edit: Yep, you can just paint over everything with the other solution. Meaning you can save whenever you want. No need to leave the xbox on!
