The Goblin army will only appear after certain criteria are met,

One player in the game has 200+ current life.
One Shadow Orb - Corruption, or Crimson Heart - Crimson, have been broken
There hasn't been a previous Goblin Army Invasion for 7 in-game days.

Additionally, the Goblin Battle Standard can be used to summon the army, if you do not wish to wait for it to randomly begin, BUT the above criteria must be met first. The Standard is made using the Loom, and 10 pieces of Tattered Cloth and 3 pieces of Wood. Tattered Cloth is optained from Goblin Scouts, although rare they can be found near the outer edges of the map.

Once these criteria are met, you may randomly encounter a vanguard of 5 Goblins heading towards your spawn point. You will soon receive an on-screen message stating that "The Goblin Army is invading from the East/West!", Right/Left respectively. This means that the first wave of the army is on the map and is travelling towards the spawn. The other waves will spawn immediately at the field of battle one after another.

There will be 80 Goblins in the army, plus an extra 40 for every player in-game that has health of 200 or more.

Unit types:

Goblin Peon: A standard melee unit. This one will break your doors off the hinges, causing it to drop away and will need to be collected and put back into place. This can be prevented by blocking up the doorway with any block (dirt/stone/mud etc.)

Goblin Thief: A fast melee unit, likes to close the distance and keep you on the defensive.

Goblin Warrior: Consider this guy a tank, the heavy melee unit of the Goblin Army, these guys give and take quite a bit of punishment. Hit them as hard as you can, but dodge liberally.

Goblin Archer: Standard ranged unit of the Goblin Army, this guy can be pretty accurate at times, and dangerous if you're still wearing low level armour.

Goblin Sorcerer: This guy will teleport and often inside your house/hideout to attack from within. Its attacks can travel through blocks, so be on the look out.

Request: As I am currently building to this point in-game, if anyone who unlocks the achievement in the mean time can confirm/deny if you just have to survive or destroy the invasion force, I can update my guide.

Cheers to caelich for the first comment, looks like the achievement will pop as the last of the army stands, and you can die against them but you do have to kill the rest.

Channel 8 News has also confirmed that the achievement popped on the last few goblins remaining, with a number of deaths against them.

Cheers to TheOnlyMatto for point out that the Crimson Biome can replace the Corruption, so look there for Crimson Hearts instead of Shadow Orbs.

Cheers to PiCkLE SQU1D for the point on Tattered Cloth locations.

Having now defeated the army myself, I can say that the army seems to be unlimited until you have defeated the set amount, then it will stop spawning units, with the message "The Goblin Army has been defeated!" The remaining units will still be there to fight, but no new ones will spawn.
