1942's shoot down % resets after each continue, so you can get 100% by continuing at the last part of a level and shooting down all the remaining enemies from there. It is nearly impossible to 100% an entire stage start to finish.

This is by far the easiest method to get this achievement:

important settings:
difficulty: easy
lives: 1
make sure you configure an autofire button

play to stage 3. when you get to the second formation of the red aircraft, you'll want to game over and continue. Any time you die from here till the level's end, you will restart right before the wingman power up. If you happen to miss an enemy, die, continue, and try again.

This is the easiest way, but it still frustrating and requires luck! You will not get 100% unless you kill -EVERY- enemy from the continue point. This includes green planes that appear but sometimes (very rarely) never fly out far enough to let you shoot. This also includes the enemies that spawn after control is lost for landing at the level's end. So make sure to weave left and right never letting go of the fire button near the end until the stage is over!

Do not be surprised if you finish the level getting screwed out of the achievement by an unfair enemy spawn.
