I did this solo using Ghost Roaster as the second character. I had a level 10 Ghost Roaster from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure--the Darklight Crypt adventure pack. Ghost Roaster can enter into ectoplasm mode and not incur any damage from attacks or spikes. The catch is he loses health gradually while in ectoplasm mode. Path one provides an upgrade that reduces the amount of health he loses while in ectoplasm mode.

I started each team survival arena by putting a rubber band around the controller so that it would keep the left button depressed. This activates ectoplasm mode and keeps it on for the duration of the battle. With Ghost Roaster now invulnerable, you can concentrate on your main character. To three star it, you'll need to be able to keep the counter up which means you can't take many hits. As long as you clear out each stage pretty quickly, Ghost Roaster has no difficulty outlasting his health depletion.

If you don't have a preferred main character, I recommend Trigger Happy. With a path one upgrade (Golden Frenzy), he is a great main character. With machine gun, bouncing bullets, and Yamato blast, he can fill the entire arena with hazards for the enemies. His ranged attacks keep him out of harm's way. If it looks like he's going to get cornered, he can clear out the enemies with his Yamato blast.

Stealth Elf, with the Forest Ninja upgrade path, is also very good. With her scarecrow trio doing the dirty work, she can keep the counter maxed out while she stays out of harm's way. However, I find Trigger Happy's ranged attacks to be a little better. He can kill a Golem with a single Yamato blast. In contrast, Stealth Elf, without a ranged attack, has to get close to the Golem and will take damage from his 360 degree attack while doing so.

This can be done solo with a second controller on the first three arena stages.

My solution was to use a very weak (level 1) Skylander for the second player. I played on Normal and made sure the second player died quickly so him getting hit wouldn't drop my combo. The three-star cutoff is really generous, as long as you can do 70k on the first and 80k on the second and third arena, you're golden. You can even be hit a few times, it's really not a big deal as long as you keep killing.

Some hints for the arenas:

- Arena 1 is easy enough to do with about any leveled Skylander, I used a level 20 Dark Stealth Elf, but really anything works here.

- Arena 2 is annoying with the moving spikes and the final wave containing golems doing their 360 degree attack. My solution was to use Double Trouble specced for suicide clones. I just ran around the outer perimeter spamming clones, using eldritch beam for the occasional grenade thrower guy and of course jumping over the golem's attacks. Since the clones do their dirty work on their own, there's very little danger to the player. Just make sure to kill the damn grenade throwers quickly, they sometimes hide in the corners, making them hard to find. If you don't want to buy Double Trouble (but really, if you want to complete Nightmare, you should), I guess a good idea would be using Trigger Happy with his ricochet bullets.

- Arena 3 is definitely most fun with Double Trouble since most monsters are Chompies, and lots of them. Eldritch Beam or Mage Bomb kills them instantly, spawining suicide clones all over the arena, who do most of the killing on their own. If you still don't want to buy Double Trouble, I guess Stealth Elf would be great to use.
