You can start with a 16 year old in career mode and work your way to the top following this selection progress:
No Chance>Long way off>Fairway off>Getting Attention>Expecting Selection> Very Close>Good Chance>regular member
*some stages might be missing but you get the jist

BUT with the below settings I found I could speed up my selection process, I'm sure similar settings would be fine this was my exact settings:

New Career:
Victoria Bushrangers
Starting difficulty - Rookie
Primary role - Batsman
Strength - Front foot
Batting order # - 1st
International affiliation - Zimbabwe
Age: 31

Upon starting a new career my status:
English county cup - Regular member
English P40 cup - Regular member
English T20 cup - Regular member
Indian T20 league - Regular member
Zimbabwe - ODI - very close
Zimbabwe - T20I - very close
Zimbabwe - Test - very close

After a few good games of smashing the bowlers around the ground for 6's etc I was picked to play for the Zimbabwe international team
