Coin crates are found in the combat areas. They are golden boxes, placed semi-randomly around the room. Shoot them in between shooting lizardfolk, and you will receive 10 coins. Repeat up to 100 times. Boxes in later combat areas are worth more coins.

EDIT: I've been informed that an update has made this more difficult. I'm checking into it.
