This is a lot simpler than it initially seems, but will take some paying attention and dedication.

At the start of the game, write down the last names of the people in your vanguard. If you get any siblings among the people in the first battle, restart since you want five unique bloodlines. As soon as you can, build five keeps, and appoint one person from each family to them. Make sure these keeps are not in outlying areas of the map, as this will put them at great risk late-game. Now you'll want to make sure that throughout the entire game, at least three of these bloodlines survive all the way to the end. Feel free to crossbreed between the families, as it's only the surname of the ruler that matters in deciding the babies' names. Babies adopted into a keep also become part of that bloodline, so feel free to use that function if any family is lacking members. When appointing new rulers and partners for them, always seek to have the highest fertility rate possible to ensure a lot of members of each family are around at all times.

Lastly, when appointing Sagewrights and Standards, don't use people from families with small numbers. Your top priority is always to keep the bloodlines going. When it's time for the final battle, make sure your vanguard consists of heroes from at least three of the original families. The achievement pops at the start of the fight.

If you're just starting the game and this sounds confusing, don't worry. The tutorials explain all these things just fine.

HammersG1984You can double up on houses in the selection because I picked all my 5 initial vanguard in the same house...

mosin360For a game that yells that its an epic long tale and that family should be important, why the hell doesn't it even bother to track your starting families? Couldn't even bother to say which five I picked. The stupid ass timeline is a waste when it misses the very first thing you do: "the families of yadda, blah, and so on were selected to beat back the enemy".

Game is a nice start but far from a finished product. Man I'd love some Jagged Alliance.

NicholasYour guide is excellent, but when you get to the end of the game, invariably you'll have more that 1 territories with 2 of 3 blocks of corruption and if you get a battle you may lose a house from 1 of these families. The solution to this is, save before moving through time if this is an issue.
This may take many reloads, but eventually instead of getting a territory attack you can get either a keep attack or a sagewright guild attack. Once it took about 15 reloads, but they seem to always change eventually.
This also works for the random events. If you get a bad result or you're looking for a good result, saving first can get you a new event. When the event starts, the result will never change, but if you've saved before the event, just reload and hope for a better event.

The only thing that matters is having these members of the original bloodlines in your Vanguard for the final battle.

I tested this. I had no keep left under one of those original family names. You can safely lose them as long as you will have someone from these families alive.

The achievement pops as soon as you start the battle, so if one of the families has no good soldiers, you can save, start the battle for the achievement, and then reload to replace them with someone better.

Does it matter if they are in your original vangard? Yes. They must be. How do you avoid having duplicates (so that you have more variety)? When you start the game you can choose 5 of your original houses - pick all 5 and you'll have 5 unique houses.
