This was reworked recently and you no longer have to fight wave after wave of ships to unlock this. Goodbye ratio!

Here is what you have to do now:
- Basic Flight Training
(Learn basic controls and navigate an asteroid belt)
- Docking and Travel Training
(Learn docking and how to navigate to a different system)
- Combat Training
(Basic combat in a Sidewinder against an Eagle)
- Advanced Combat Training
(2 waves. 1st a single Eagle then once destroyed 2 more drop in. Destroy all 3 to complete.)
- Mining Training
(Learn how to mine using a Sidewinder)

Regarding the combat - its been significantly watered down since these missions first appeared. You no longer fight against a much stronger ship. The idea is to first teach basic combat (use your chaff) and then teach how to stick a target and perhaps use some pip management. See below if you need a refresher on this. Also, they want to teach you to use energy weapons against shields and then traditional weapons against bare hull. Finally - as some have noted, this is a great place to practice your Assist-Off flight. Turning off flight assist enables very fast turning. Disable it to come about much faster and re-enable when you are facing your target. If not changed, the default command to disable/reenable FA is cn_Y+cn_RB.

Pip Management:
The D-Pad is set up to change how power is distributed in your ship. You can see your power management in the lower right area to the left of your fuel readout. You can have a maximum of 4 pips in any given area and have 6 total to assign. Reset this to default at any time by pressing cn_down (default is 2 pips to each)

cn_left SYS controls shields and the more pips placed in it, the stronger your shields will be.
cn_up ENG controls the power to your engines. This also determines the rate your boost recharges.
cn_right WEP controls power to your weapons. This is a capacitor and when empty weapons will fire at a very reduced rate. Additionally, weapon strength is increased when additional pips are assigned here.
