For anyone who struggles to find these guys, this was where I found it worked best for me.
The Boss Bears are level 15 and hate fire, so a mage might be handy to speed it up, they have ~71,000hp and can be slow to go down.

Emerald Graves seems to be the best spot for me. Double check and make sure the trial for Grizzly End is on, I found occasionally they turned off for me, then when you know it's on, travel to Briathos' Steps camp, and go west around the edge of the mercenary camp, then follow the hills around to your left to Harrow- there should be a steep hill going towards the south just before the edge of the map. I found 9/10x there's a great bear waiting for you. They're hard to miss- in the tactical camera they're called Boss Bears, not Elite Bears, FYI. If you get lost, check out the map with rifts on it-

    http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Emerald_Graves
[On the left side of the map, about halfway down there's an exit from the map, the rift just to the right of it is where I'm talking about.]

Then pretty much comb the hills straight north towards Gracevine camp, continue past that to the big river, there's usually one or two around here, and across the river to the north where another rift was there's sometimes a bear, sometimes a giant.

When you've done a run from south to north, I found you have to leave the area and come back to repopulate the bears, so quickest I found without reloading the map, is to pick the farthest camp away from them on the map, which is the southern one you start at, give it a few seconds until you know it's loaded up the sounds and textures, then quick travel back to Briathos.
Shouldn't take more than half an hour to an hour if you get lucky spawns.

HolyHalfDeadBoss Bears, Elite Bears, lol. This achievement is for killing 10 Great Bears. You know it is a Great Bear because it is about 3 times the size of a regular bear. I found them by the river near Direstone camp 60% of the time.

If your kills don’t count, set it to Nightmare and don’t have any other Trials on. Every single Great Bear I killed counted.

Vulker70731 August 2023. Worked like a charm. I had slightly less success than Brother Rhogar. It took me 13 attempts to spawn 10 bears using his suggested location.

PaddyW106Great guide, finally got it after starting a new playthrough as the old progress had stopped.

    Farming Method

First of all, you need to turn the trial on prior to fighting a bear in Emerald Graves. This is done by going into the options and going into trials. Turn on Grizzly End.

This Trial will make the Elite Bears into Boss Bears with 71K Health. They are difficult to kill on Nightmare, so it is best to do this on a save and changing it to casual AFTER you have completed nightmare.

    Easiest Method

Go to Camp Direstone. Run up the hill towards the river. 20% of the time a bear will spawn there at on the river. Sometimes it spawns a little further down the river on your right. If you don't see a bear, FAST TRAVEL back to the Direstone camp.

Keep doing this until you finish. Not every time will a bear spawn, i didn't have a bear spawn for 7 in a row, but I did have 2 bears in a row as well.

    NOTES

This MUST be done in a single save. If you reload the save after killing the bear, you will be required to start the counter again. I killed one, came back later and killed 2 more and ended with 2 in total. Later I killed 5 more and my counter was only at 5. That is when I realized this, and I had to kill 10 more in a row to get the achievement to pop where the counter continued after the first 5.

I did this after the game was over. Bears at that time were rare. I ran around like other solutions said and there was nothing. Maybe you will have better luck running around, but why bother. Just keep fast travelling and running back to that one place. AND DO NOT RELOAD your save.

AmagiciaNamdGobI would like to add while doing this at lvl 27 finding these bears is not easy but, i have had the most luck returning to Gracevine. I have seen them on the way north and on the river as well as right when you get to go north through the small path along the river. Just keep reloading Gracevine and heading north and take the first open access on the opposite side of the river. Also starting from Gracevine you can reload while already on your mount which makes it faster. This takes a ton of times back and forth. GL

The SCHWARTZ 00I love it when a solution still works after 5 years. Thank you, worked perfectly.

While each of the Trails has an okay guide already, I found that I didn't read each correctly, and ended up having issues, and having to start a 3rd play through just because I mis-read the Trial of the Lovers guide. Rather than having people bounce around each Trial to determine when they need to turn it on/off I thought it would make it easier if there was a single, common description to help people.

First, there are a couple of Trials that can likely be completed using existing saves:

Trial of the Hermit - As mentioned in the original guide, you can turn on Grizzly End and go to the Emerald Graves and follow the guide there to get your 10 great bears. This took me around an hour of wandering around each time until the bear showed up, but works well.
Trial of the Tower - Since Emprise Du Lion had the 3 most difficult dragons most people will likely have a save they can use to kill the Hivernal dragon so just turn on Rub Some Dirt On It and kill the dragon. The only note on the original guide is that the Hivernal dragon is actually the bottom of the three, not the middle.

Additionally, a few other trials may be completed using existing saves, or by turning on as soon as you start Trespasser.

Trial of the Emperor - You need to turn on Walk Softly and kill 20 special foes. These foes show up randomly, so you may get all 20 during the DLC, or not. It's been noted that you need to do them in one save, so it may be easier to do them as part of the new game you need to start.
Trial of the Empress - Turn on Even Ground, and with every member of your team level 16 or higher, kill the Hinterlands dragon. Since this is the first dragon you come across most people will have killed this early on. If you are lucky enough to have a save before you killed this dragon you can work to up your level to the appropriate point before killing the dragon. For those (like me) who killed him early on and don't have an appropriate save, you will need to complete this on your second game.

All the remaining trials require you to start a new game (preferably Casual Mode to make it easy).

As soon as you have control of your character, go into Options, Trials and enable:
    Fair-weather Friends
    Walk Softly
    Take It Slow

The goal is to get to Skyhold as quickly as you can. Don't bother opening up any other locations other than what is required for the main story. Close Rifts, capture camps and fill requisitions to get Power and complete the initial main quest storylines.

I completed Trial of the Emperor pretty quickly (before In Hushed Whispers), so once you see that pop you can turn off the Walk Softly Trial.

When you are ready to start the In Hushed Whispers trial go into Options, Trials and turn on Travel Light. Once you complete the quest the Trial of the Magician achievement will pop, and you can turn off Travel Light again.

Work your way through the main quests until you get to Skyhold. If you've not done anything other than necessary to move the story forward you should have no issue being level 4/5 as you reach Skyhold. Once the Trial of the Fool achievement pops you can turn off Take It Slow.

Once you are at Skyhold you will want to go and get all the available party members and then continue the story line until you get to the Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts quest. Once you've started this, the achievement for Trial of the Lovers will pop, and you can turn off the Fair-Weather Friends Trial.

Continue the storyline until you have enough Power to unlock Emprise Du Lion. Before travelling there you will want to turn on the Rest Easy trial and work your way through capturing Suledin Keep. Once the Trial of Temperance achievement pops you can turn off Rest Easy.

At this point, you are either done (if you were able to complete Trial of the Empress using a previous save), or you will need to build up your characters to level 16. Keep in mind that all your followers need to be at level 16 as well, and they tend to trail behind you, so make sure everyone is level 16 before you go back to the Hinterlands, turn on the Even Ground Trial and defeat the Frostback Dragon.

I realize that much of the above information is available in the existing Guides, but you really need to map out a complete strategy to complete this DLC with the minimum of frustration. I screwed it up and need to start a 3rd play through just to complete the Trial of the Lovers achievement. Hopefully this guide will help others avoid this frustration.

    EgotisticGeckoThanks for that.

JoeyPajamasI've just started a new game with ALL of the DLC. I've just arrived at Skyhold. Is it too late to complete these trials without starting again?
Posted by JoeyPajamas on 21 Sep 15 at 09:54
EgotisticGeckoUnfortunately, yes. You will need to start over. You need to have 3 of the Trials turned on before you leave the prologue (one is to get to Skyhold by level 5 or less).
