I was having so much trouble with this. I absolutely suck at singing in Rock Band (Guess I'm tone deaf)

But I found the Rock Band 2 song Cool for Cats to be very easy to achieve these vocal freestyles

It's a zero out of Nightmare difficulty level

nightw0lfGreat suggestion. Got it the first try without even realizing I had already done a freestyle vocal.

Freestyle vocals involve singing at a different pitch than the blue bars while also staying in key. You see all the extra little lines along the vocal track when you're playing a song with freestyle vocals? Match your pitch to one of those lines to get freestyle. If you get freestyle credit, the pie will fill up with orange instead of blue. The whole phrase does not have to be orange, but you need to get a sizable amount and get an Awesome rating on the phrase by filling up the whole pie. If you get enough of the phrase freestyle, somewhere around the 25-30% mark, it will say Vocal Freestyle instead of Awesome. It may take some time to get used to, but if you find a song that works with your range and try humming, you should get it eventually.

It should also be noted that freestyle is only available on solo vocals on Hard or Expert difficulty, and only certain songs have it available. It will show on the song selection screen if it does.

This wont be a 100% solution on how to get this but just some tips from a mediocre singer

Now, what are 'Freestyle' vocal ratings you ask, well Freestyle is supposedly when you sing a different word that fits the song/rhythm since you might not know all the lyrics but it also helps for humming. You can tell when part of a phrase has registered as a freestyle since instead of the pie chart for the phrase filling up all blue you will see an orange section.
A little bit of orange isn't enough you need to have freestyled at least 30% of the phrase whilst also getting enough blue to fill the pie chart also so it would have been an 'Awesome' only since you have some freestyle it becomes 'Freestyle' rated. Earning one 'Freestyle' will pop this achievement mid song, however there is an achievement for getting 3 in one song so ill detail a good song for that.

So the song I used for this achievement was Prayer by Disturbed and I played on Expert though freestyle is also available on Hard.

I used a headset for my controller instead of a mic so a mic will be easier and I hummed with the tune of the song trying my best to match the pitches on the screen and sometimes the game registered it being freestyle, now I don't think this will work for everyone but hopefully for some.
