I prefer guitar/bass for this achievement.
I rarely gold star songs, so I thought there was no way I could get this achievement.

For this achievement:

Expert difficulty ONLY
30 disc songs only - NO DLC
- The Rivals update added the Rock Band 3 filter system again. Hold Blue to bring up the advanced filter. Under "Song Source" deselect every source except for Rock Band 4. Then go back and you can sort the disc songs by any preferred filter, such a difficulty level (Credit A1337Haxor for pointing this out)
Quickplay ONLY - no tour mode, play a show mode, or rockudrama mode
Gold star means you played the song really, really well, but you DO NOT need 100% or full combo on the song.

This achievement can be attained by utilizing bass.
Bass is usually much easier than Guitar, where a bass song with a "4" difficulty can be gold starred but you might struggle to 5-star a guitar track with a "4" difficulty.

First of all, start by gold starring these songs. They are the easiest songs in the game.
It doesn't matter which instrument you use.

Really Easy on All Instruments (5 songs):
"Cedarwood Road" U2
"Centuries" Fall Out Boy
"Fever" The Black Keys
"Free Falling" The Warning
"What's Up?" 4 Non Blondes

These songs I gold starred on Guitar.
Try them out to see if they can help you towards the achievement:

Gold Starred on Guitar (3 songs):
"I Miss the Misery" Halestorm
"V-Bomb" Dark Wheels
"The Warrior" Scandal

Bass songs mostly come down to either rhythm or a few patterns within the song.
You should be able to learn these songs within a few tries.

Bass songs (23 songs):
"The Wolf" Mumford & Sons
"Little White Church" Little Big Town
"I Will Follow" U2
"The One I Love" R.E.M.
"Turn it Around" Lucius
"You Make Loving Fun" Fleetwood Mac
"Spiders" System of a Down
"Still Into You" Paramore
"Tongue Tied" Grouplove
"Friday I'm In Love" The Cure
"I Bet My Life" Imagine Dragons
"Kick It Out" Heart
"Light the Fuse" Slydigs
"My God Is the Sun" Queens of the Stone Age
"Prayer" Disturbed
"Your Love" The Outfield
"Ain’t Messin ‘Round" Gary Clark, Jr.
"Brown Eyed Girl" Van Morrison - has a bass solo
"Cold Clear Light" Johnny Blazes & PB
"No One Like You" Scorpions
"Pistol Whipped" Tijuana Sweetheart
"Caught Up in You" .38 Special
"Hail to the King" Avenged Sevenfold
"The Warrior" Scandal - also list above for guitar

Finally, if you're down to a few songs, I recommend playing these on vocal.
They are spoken word and super easy, so your singing ability doesn't even matter.

Easy Vocals (2 songs):
"Dead Black (Heart of Ice)" Soul Remnants
"Short Skirt/Long Jacket" Cake

Even if you can't beat all of the bass songs, or some of the guitar songs listed above, you should have at least 25 songs gold starred after going through the above list. Scroll through the list of 40 remaining songs and you should be able to find 5 additional songs that you can gold star.

Additional notes:
Play through the song a few times, even if you know you won't get a gold star. This helps you learn the song
Don't be afraid / intimidated and don't score watch - enjoy the songs so you don't create a mental block for yourself (this happened to me on "The Warrior")
I tried playing a song I wouldn't like (and gold starring it), followed by one I would like. For example, I played "Pistol Whipped" (not a fan of it) and then I played "Caught up on You". That way it doesn't seem like a grind.
Finally, if you're having trouble on a song you KNOW you can gold star, take a break and try again in a few hours or the next day.

This whole process only took me two weeks by playing for an hour or three after work each day.
