You've probably already worked out Painite is hard to find. Very hard. Needle in a haystack hard.
Seemingly, it only occurs in pristine metallic belts. See the link below for a list of where they can be found:

HIP 4005 worked for me - the A ring of planet 5.
The default seems to be that the inner ring - the A ring - is metallic. You'll be able to tell whether it is by the appearance - metallic asteroids are mixed brown and grey whereas rocky asteroids are plain grey.
Even when you know where to look, it's pure luck whether you find an asteroid containing Painite. I'd suggest using prospector drones so you can tell more readily what a given asteroid contains. Simply fit a prospector limpet controller and allocate it to a fire group. Fire a limpet at an asteroid then target it - it will show the mineral breakdown.
Typically, even when you find an asteroid containing Painite, it will be a fairly small (10-15%) component. You do get lucky on occasion - I found an asteroid with 48% Painite composition and it on its own gave me 7 tonnes.
I would suggest steering clear of Resource Extraction Sites - you are far more likely to find pirates there. Better to just drop into the A ring and chances are you'll be left alone.
I would also suggest doing this as part of the process of unlocking the achievements for refining 100 and 500 tonnes. Equip your ship with as big a refinery as you can - the higher the class, the more bins it holds and the more separate minerals you can simultaneously refine.
Good luck! |
