Early in the game, you encounter the Beast From The East in front of a large tree. He tells you that you must show him you are a "high level." There are two ways to do this. One is to show him the Shrunken Head. You get this in the back of the mover's van.
The other way is to put on the Haunted Mask while on the screen with the Beast. You get the Mask by retrieving it from the laundry room, after throwing an item down the laundry chute in the upstairs bathroom. WARNING. You can only remove the Haunted Mask the first time you put it on. Do so a second time, and you will not be able to remove it until you reach the mall. I believe it is possible to be killed by the Mask if you wear it too long.
