Preparing for Demogorgon

You'll need to have a 2,000 item level, complete the Underdark campaign to the point where you earn the artifact (Chapter 8), and queue from Mantol-Derith to access the Demogorgon fight that occurs every hour at half-past the hour. There's three phases to the fight, and you'll want to complete each phase with gold to insure this achievement, so drink your potions!

Occasionally during this raid you will gain Madness and be unable to use encounters and dailies; to cleanse Madness you'll need to step in a "sanity well" (blue circle), but do not stay there for long because any enemy inside the circle will turn it red and disable it.

Be sure to run your new campaign tasks daily to unlock the Epic Demogorgon fight.

Fighting Demogorgon

In the videos I play an item level 3,297 cleric and an item level 2,943 Great Weapon Fighter. Though the videos show gameplay with my guild, I've invited Zone chatters to form a group, played with non-guild friends and solo-queued in an effort to insure these strategies work.

Phase 1
Close all the tears (portals) and kill the enemies as quickly as possible.

Overview: Opening purple tears spawns larger enemies than blue tears which spawn larger enemies than green tears. Killing all the enemies from a tear earns you progress towards the next reward tier. Larger enemies provide more points than smaller enemies.

Strategy: Closing purple portals and killing the enemies quickly will result in the quickest Gold. Though there is no reason to open any other portals, if other players open them you'll want to dispatch the enemies quickly. If you are a tank, spend the whole fight building threat on Demogorgon to keep him from killing teammates.

Phase 2
Kill Goristro by preventing his charge attacks from leading him into black runes (circles) on the wall that heal him.

Overview: Fight in the middle of the room, and damage Goristro in bursts -- stopping only to cleanse yourself of Madness as needed . Goristro will use a few melee attacks and charge at you. Madness will inflict you often, and it usually occurs a few seconds after Goristro jumps back to the middle after a charge attack. If Goristro hits one of the yellow runes on the wall during his charge attack, he will lose a small chunk of health (~5%), but if he runs into a black rune he will regenerate his health (~20%). It would appear that there is a way to interrupt Goristro's charge attack, but this is unconfirmed.

Strategy: Don't waste time luring the Goristro to the wall portals as the cutscene and Zone chat suggests. The risks of Goristro healing and the loss of time traveling is not worth the small damage reward from the yellow wall runes! You can do it if you insist, and do a little extra damage, but the majority of damage that Goristro takes should come from player attacks. The trick to this fight is timing. Practice being cleansed and ready to use your complete rotation (debuffs, dailies, artifacts and encounters) before Madness disables them again. If instead of wall rune portals, Goristro is lead to the wall by the bonfire: ranged players will be able to continue to attack and apply debuffs during the jump attack; melee players will have a debuffed boss to fight while other players cleanse; and the group will stay tighter together because the original sanity well will remain the default choice. If you are a Great Weapon Fighter or Rogue you should fight through the Madness and only go to cleanse after Goristro charges, other classes will want to burn their encounters fast and then fall back to build stacks and debuff or build stacks with at-wills from inside the sanity well during the time the on-screen warning is present.

Phase 3
Kill Demogorgon.

Overview: Demogorgon has only a few attacks, and of course one of them will debuff you with Madness.

Strategy: Simple and straight-forward, you probably have nothing to worry about if you've already got two Golds. You have a solid ten-second window at the beginning of the fight to do your entire rotation, pop your daily, and use your artifact all before Demogorgon inflicts you with the Madness debuff. Rinse and repeat until he is dead.

General Raid Tips

Team composition is really important in boss fights and raids so find people who compliment your class to queue with. There's always many of them shouting in zone chat. If you're support, invite DPS, if you're DPS, invite some support. If no one is shouting, shout.

Use "Say" chat at the entrance of the fight while others are watching the cutscene to say "Only close purple tears." or "2nd phase boss, stay front center!" Many players will listen.

Be as prepared as possible. Check class build guides on the web and consider upgrading gear for improving your effectiveness in raid material, and be sure to stack enough armor penetration (60% resistance ignored) for raid battles if you are a DPS class.

Know your class: Rogues are great at closing portals; tanks can distract Demogorgon and use Into the Fray during fights; clerics can buff/debuff, heal, and Break the Spirit of bosses; GWF and Warlocks can do massive damage at low item levels; Control Wizards can kill mobs and buff allies; and Hunters can provide dodges and combat advantage.

Utilize your teammates by improving their effectiveness. Be sure to turn on any class abilities, encounter powers, or use any gear that boosts damage or defense of allies to improve your chances of success in group activities. In the video I am using Anointed Army, Divine Glow and Empowered Break the Spirit to bolster allies' defense and increase their damage against the bosses -- these three spells alone greatly increase the group's survival and DPS.

Stop worrying about DPS, it's not your biggest problem. If you think you're losing the fight because you don't have enough DPS, think again. Important enough to say twice: almost every class in this game has a feat or encounter or passive class ability that will increase your parties' damage, decrease the enemy's damage resistance, provide immunity, or otherwise greatly benefit allies nearby. If you're not running these skills the enemy will have more HP and your group will do less damage.
