After you load up a new world with cheats of and in survival mode, mine enough oak wood logs to make a crafting table, a pickaxe, and have 2 logs left that haven't been turned into planks. Gather 8 cobblestone to make a furnace and place a log in the top slot of the furnace and a wood plank or piece of coal in the bottom. Once smelted, the log will turn into charcoal. Place the second log in the top slot of the furnace and use the charcoal that you just smelted to power the furnace which will make another piece of charcoal from charcoal.
The achievements for this game didn't unlock until I hit save and quit from the game and checked the progress from the main menu.
