First off, you either need to succumb to developing tendonitis in your right thumb or own a turbo controller. Whatever you go with, you're going to want to have the A and B buttons firing as quickly as possible for the entire game. With that strategy in place, focus the entire game taking down enemies in homing-missile combo chains (holding X and moving L-Stick over multiple enemies and releasing to fire). You'll find that, thanks to the quick shots of your chain gun and torpedos, many enemies you chain will be shot down before releasing the missiles. This is perfectly acceptable and it allows you to target additional enemies assuming the max limit of 8 isn't preventing you otherwise. I can't be positive as it's hard to concentrate on specific scores during the fracas of a play-through, but I believe you still get the chain bonuses for taking down enemies with torpedos or chain guns that already had a lock-on. Other than that, be on the lookout for atypical enemies/hazards during your minimal 3 runs on each difficulty such as various mines, purple suicidal ships, space debris and asteroids. I'd advise paying closest attention to asteroids and debris as they cannot be destroyed and can cause a lot of damage. The last two levels get a little chaotic with the mines and suicide ships so concentrate on them first and always use your temporal shift (RB) when the red labeled ship appear and take him out for big points.

The only difference between normal and hard is the amount of damage you take from hits. It does not take nearly as much skill (or pain) to get this with a turbo control.

Shoot for minimum of 1.5m points - this seems to be the requirement for obtaining five stars for each level.

A tip for turbo controller users: tape a dime on the controller over the A & B buttons with turbo set as fast as possible. If you don't collect a warp item in the level you might want to take off the tape and check your star number when the "Level Complete" pops on screen or you may not know if you've gotten it. A warp item will allow you to select the next level and check your last level's highest star rating in case your turbo set buttons skipped past the score screen at the end of the level.
