Like a lot of Elite achievements, this one isn't particularly difficult - just time-consuming. It requires you to scan 50 tourist beacons. To do so, drop out of super-cruise in the usual way, target the beacon and it will automatically scan it. A message will appear in your comms in-box with a bit of blurb about the beacon you have just scanned. There's also an audible tone if it's the first time you have scanned the beacon.

Beacons seem to come in two types:

1. "Static" beacons, which are always there and you scan at any time; and

2. "Dynamic" beacons, which are generated by the game when you take a sightseeing passenger mission requiring you to take a passenger to a named system. The passenger will then tell you which planet within the system the beacon is located at.

You can grind out the achievement by just doing sightseeing missions but it's possible to speed things up by bearing in mind a couple of things.

Firstly, there are a few systems with several "static" beacons. Sol is a good place to start (if you have the system permit) - it has at least 10 of them. (I didn't count past that as the tenth one was enough to get me to 50.)

If you're Elite-ranked, Shinrarta Dezhra is also worth a look as there are 4-5 of them there, to do with the Pilots Federation and its history.

There are also 4 beacons in the Lugh system. There are almost certainly others out there with multiple static systems (and I'd guess that some of the systems like Lave that featured in the original versions of Elite will also have them) but those are the ones I came across.

Secondly, it appears that the game "forgets" that you have already scanned beacons if you scan them again after a certain period since the first scan. The same seems to be true of listening posts, for the other similar scanning achievement.

I'm guessing it's month but I haven't been able to verify that. I scanned my first beacons in Shinrarta Dezhra then was able to scan them again (and the achievement counter rose by one) about 6 weeks later.
