The Nitty Gritty:
The captive ball target is located in the upper center of the table between the skull gate and a loop that exits on the upper right flipper.
Hits on he captive ball will allow you to obtain a new weapon. The weapons are randomized, but the BFG is always going to be last (if anyone has gotten it before all the other weapons, please comment below). After each weapon is unlocked, the next weapon adds one to the total captive ball hits required.
First weapon = 2 hits
Second Weapon = 3 hits
etc, etc until a total of 27 hits (2+3+4+5+6+7 = 27) unlocks the BFG
Once a weapon is obtained, it is available for that entire game, also, progress towards each weapon is held if you lose a ball.
If you are like me, and are simply going for the achievement It is best to keep the play simple and avoid any special missions. The first skull hit will present you with a mission selection, I would typically select "Observe, Repeat" as this appeared to be the best option to avoid starting alternate modes.
The most reliable shot for the captive ball that I used was the left flipper right as the ball hit the "N" in the word "ZEN" printed on the flipper. The only downside of this shot is occasionally there was not enough power and the ball hits the captive ball target and rolls straight down the middle. Shots from the right flipper have a touch more angle on the target and do not seem as susceptible to ball draining.
Once the BFG is in your inventory, you ready it while holding down the A button and using the flippers to cycle through the selections. I noticed I was not able to select weapons while the ball was at rest against a flipper, most likely due to the trigger input, so kick the ball up a ramp and then hold down the A button.
You will now need to get some monsters on the table in order to BFG them. Any mission that has a monster appear on the right wire loop, just above the right flipper, will do. In edew391's video, he recommends completing the first part of the "Observe & Report" mission. Once the monster is standing on top of the wire loop, hitting the loop will open the capture target, and hitting the capture target will fire the weapon. The achievement should pop once you hit the capture target.
