Monk is the character that was the hardest for me out of all of the characters I have beaten All Zones Mode with so far, which only excludes Aria and Coda. Everything about Monk makes playing as him a pain. If you are planning on beating all zones mode with him, be prepared to completely rewrite all of your muscle memory that you've acquired while playing this game.

Monk's main trait is that he cannot pick up gold or else he dies instantly. This happens no matter how much health you have or even if you have a potion. Gold means instant death. Because of this, you have to be careful when killing enemies so that their gold does not block the path that you need to take. Be careful in tight corridors and try to get enemies to follow you into a larger room so the gold is out of the way. Also, never kill an enemy near the entrance to a shop. It makes the shop impossible to enter/leave without a bomb to remove the gold because of the walls of the shop dropping gold when destroyed. If you are ever trapped by gold, don't be afraid to let the song finish. You will continue to the next floor if this happens. Bombs can be lifesavers if you don't want the song to end because they are the only way to get rid of gold lying on the ground. Bomb traps will also do the same and have the added benefit of killing enemies without them dropping gold, so utilize them when possible. The final thing worth mentioning about gold is that all enemies drop gold while playing as Monk, even boss minions, so fights such as Deep Blues become exponentially harder than normal because every enemy in the fight drops gold. Simply keep playing until you've trained yourself to avoid gold like the plague and maneuver around it.

The other part that makes Monk quite difficult is his health and starting equipment. Obviously, if you can avoid being hit, there is no problem here, but realistically this won't happen. Monk only starts with a measly 2 hearts as well as a blood shovel, which makes life even harder. Every time you dig something other than dirt you take damage. Because of this, armor is imperative to staying alive because many enemies can kill you in 1-2 hits. Personally, I also always tried to get a different shovel as soon as possible as well as a weapon that gives range, like the longsword or spear. I found these weapons much more useful than any of the other ones, but I never picked up a rapier or a cat o' nine tails. These weapons can allow you to move while attacking, which when not expecting it can cause some quick gold deaths. Some other recommended equipment is the lead boots because they protect against wind spells some enemies use. (Specifically in zones 2 and 4)

In order to win with Monk, a lot of things need to line up well. Good equipment must show up at the right times as well as you not accidentally stepping onto a pile of gold. It takes a lot of time, practice, and luck but is doable.
