Tips on how I did this:

I would recommend playing through the game on Einherjar difficulty first to get a feel of the game. You have to do a minimum of 3 playthroughs of the game anyway since you have to beat it both with the warrior and the shield maiden as well as doing a new game+. So I saved Valhalla mode for last.

As far as which class to use, I used the bow for Valhalla mode. Take note though that this is a class that does not do much damage at all and the rage for this class is damn near useless, so progress is painfully slow. Ultimately it is up to you and what you feel comfortable with.

The important things to know are that while going through levels, abuse the checkpoints if you need to. If you ever find yourself low on health without any healing charges left or just plain realize you have kicked a hornets nest and feel uneasy with your situation, don't hesitate to pause and quit to main menu. Quitting to the menu and selecting continue will put you right back at your last checkpoint, avoiding losing progress in your current map that quitting to the village would cause. I used this method on a few boss fights that were not going so well. Also, doing this refills all health alters on the map. So any you have used to recharge our healing totem will be back to recharge it again if need be.

If you do happen to die, use the tried and true method of deleting the local save. For those who don't know, if you die, don't quit out or press anything. Hit the menu button on your controller, scroll down to Vikings, hit start and select manage game. Go to your save file and delete LOCAL SAVE ONLY. It usually takes clicking it twice for whatever reason. Once your LOCAL SAVE is deleted the game will have closed on its own. Relaunch the game and it will sync with your cloud save. I would usually close out the game after every mission or 2 to make sure my cloud save was synced as recently as possible in case of a death. However, if you have done the game on einherjar and finished your new game+ already then you should be pretty familiar with the game by now and death will be unlikely unless you get careless. I finished with no deaths so just play it safe and it is not as bad as it seems.

It is also worth mentioning that you can have a friend jump in to help with a non Valhalla character to run around and help you kill things if you want. I did this with the last map and boss because I was tired of being so damn weak. (Seriously the bow build sucks.) However, be warned, the second player does NOT get credit or the achievements for beating the game, even if you did the whole game together. My friend and I found that out the hard way. They will unlock all achievements up until the end.

Achievements that do NOT unlock for the second player are the one for completing all challenges on all the maps, completing all the hunts, the achievements tied to beating the game, difficulties, and the warrior/shield maiden.

Short version: save this for your third playthrough and just play it safe and take your time and you should be fine.
