There are three things you can scan with the SRV in Elite. Data Points, which are rare crashed-satellite-esque spheres found on planets the same way you find resources. These return ~5000 CR, and as such aren't worth specifically seeking out. You can also scan points at some settlements, which opens up a mini-game of sorts to make you scan all three in quick succession. Again, the rewards aren't too great for these.

By far the best way to do this is to scan Barnacles, which net you between 30,000 and 100,000 CR. It took me five to reach the 250,000 needed for this achievement. Barnacles also have the benefit of being meticulously catalogued by the community, unlike the other two methods, which will require a less guided approach.

More information on Barnacles can be found here:
http://canonn.science/codex/science/large-barnacles/

I used this spreadsheet for locations:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bichQJBbL9ygW1xXc3GQ...

Make sure to only visit ones listed as being "ripe" and not ones that are dead. Barnacles do not appear to be permanent fixtures in the galaxy, so personally I went for the newly-recorded ones on the list (in the Witch Head Sector at the time of writing).

As for the actual scanning process, you will need a vehicle hangar and an SRV. Proceed to the coordinates listed in the spreadsheet, land as close as you can, then take the SRV the rest of the way. It can be a bit tricky to navigate to the coordinates as you'll be travelling at speed. I found it easiest to keep my ship on 90° headings (0,90,180,270) in order to get one coordinate close, then turn 90° and get the other coordinate close. You'll improve with a little practice.

The Barnacle sites will have one (or more) central blobs, with multiple stalks surrounding them. All of these can be scanned, but only the central blobs give any credits. The stalks will either give nothing, or meta-alloys (shoot these stalks to pick up these, they're worth ~85,000 to sell).

After scanning the blob check your transactions panel on the left and it'll have the value you'll receive listed. This varies, but I'd expect around 50,000 credits for each one. So you'll need to visit a few of these to get this achievement. As a final note, only when you sell the data at a station will the achievement progress increase. Simply scanning the Barnacles isn't enough.
