    E vee dub.
    .
@lilmisstexas07, these achievements refer to the Necromancer Add-On content. The Necromancer class must be used to unlock this achievement.

Since I was noticing in comments people were having trouble with this still, here's how I got the achievement. It's pretty easy and foolproof.

The first thing is some things to try if you find yourself having trouble getting this to pop:

    1) If you have Frailty equipped, don't use it on the Shadow Clone.

    2) Unequip all thorns giving skills, gear, gems, etc. You can see your thorns damage under "character details" from the inventory menu.

    3) Unequip any legendary gems that either directly deal damage or apply DOTs.

With all that out of the way my favored strategy for this is as follows (see below video for a demo):

First off, reduce the difficulty far enough down that things die quickly, but not instantly (more than one hit) from your basic resource generating attack. For me, I found hard to be enough to keep things alive long enough that there weren't accidents but keep things with low enough health that you don't need to try.

Next, make sure you have simulacrum and bone spear equipped before you fight Diablo, and that the rune for bone spear doesn't modify the behavior too much (it should still be a spear of bone flying in a roughly straight line). I used Blighted Marrow, but several other runes will be fine.

Damage Diablo enough that you go to the shadow realm, then once the shadow clone spawns, use simulacrum. With simulacrum active run away from the shadow clone, it will probably still aggro you but this is fine, just run until you, the shadow clone, and your simulacrum are in a nice line (see video), then spam bone spear while aiming away from the shadow clone. Simulacrum should aim where you're aiming, hitting the shadow clone in the process. Once the shadow clone dies, the achievement pops.

The below video is the actual footage of the run where I got the achievement to pop, but the UI overlay that showed that wasn't recorded, and I got the challenge on the night the DLC released so that didn't pop as a visual aid unfortunately.

neeker75You don't really need to remove thorn damage. I went in with pretty much my strongest skills, thorn the shadow clone till his HP was left with a little, and then activate my simulacrum. I just stood there thereafter, and my simulacrum melee the clone to death.

It took me longer to reach Diablo's location than to get the achievement.

    Self Controlled

This achievement has just been fixed and now unlocks normally. Using the Simulacrum ability merely duplicates any ability you put in the cn_RT (secondary ability) slot which you are able to choose any of your abilities upon using it continually and killing your Shadow Clone during the shadow realm in Diablo's fight will unlock this achievement.

    Edit:

Apparently Blizzard did yet another fix and anyone who does not have this achievement can get it by following the requirement.

SpiderstyleI’m quite amazed that this seems to be still bugged in 2023.

Just managed to get the in game challenge, which I can also see under Challenges -> Classes, but lo and behold: no achievement unlocked.

Retried many times. Lots of variations tried. Also let Simulacrum kill the Shadow Clone with secondary weapon, but no dice. :-(

If anybody has any suggestions other than restarting I’m all ears. TIA!

NZT21@Spiderstyle, did you use quick resume? That messes up a lot of achievements. I would delete the local save, redownload it from the cloud and try it again immediately after a possible glitch, but you are probably too late for that.

    FlaviusPrimusYeah, this is still bugged.

I too just recently got the Self Controlled in game challenge but no achievement popped.

Did this in Seasonal Hardcore and tried again in Hardcore.

Also tried many variations to no avail using secondary skill (Bone Spear) and just let the Simulacrum scythe the shadow clone down.

    Totally stumped at this point.
