How to unlock the Explorer achievement

Here's a walkthrough I wrote up with the original game back in 2008. As I get to the free roam areas myself I'll get more details for that section. Also question if a part is confusing. Using the position of the sun and units of measurement are what we had to do to make do when there were no maps and fancy video capture software.
Make sure you're using one of your Baja career trucks so that the miles add up for the 1000 and 2000 mile achievements. Also make sure that damage is on Cosmetic or Off so that you don't have to keep restarting when your engine breaks and that trees are set on few so you can just drive through forests and deserts with no problems. To check your status go to options and look at Profile Stats, there it shows X out of 5 for each area.

    Cabo San Lucas

Turn right at the start and head down the road. After you cross the bridge shoot left towards the mountain to discover Cabo Wash. 1 mile from starting. Press Pause and Restart. Drive straight down the road and find Downtown Cabo, 0.2 miles from start. keep going on that road and it'll turn to 1 lane after you exit the town. Soon after it does it'll end up at a gigantic building, drive in the overhang to find A Golf Course. 1 mile from the last one. Pull a U turn and go back to the town, take the first left road you come to. Take the road about 2 miles from the last landmark before going off road to get to the coastline in about a mile. Ride the coast for another 1.2 miles till a dirt track turns into asphalt. On the right up the hill 0.3 miles there's a large group of houses with a dead end Cul-de-sac. There it will discover Backyard Pools at the end of the road. From there turn around and take the first right and follow the road until you see the main highway again. Jump over to it and turn left down the road. at the Toro Ranch billboard take a right on the dirt road and then drive over to the big white building to discover The Scarface compound Don Juan Mendoza's Compound. About 2 miles form the last one by taking roads.

    Canyon De Chelly

Take off down the road for about 0.1 miles and find Ron Ron's Farm between the blue barns on the right. Turn around back to where you came from and head off of the cliffs in about 0.2 miles to the huge cliff wall with a paved road going up it, that being another 0.4 miles. Follow the road and once it levels off with the cliff, turn around to follow the edge towards the huge tree, there's Spider Rock View. Turn around and follow the road around the huge canyon for 3.6 miles. once you get to the other side of the canyon, the road will go up a hill and there will be a dirt road to the right, near a Progressive Billboard. Follow it up to find Rolling Hills Raceway. Head back to the road and take a right. After 2.1 miles you'll cross a bridge and see a BF Goodwrench Billboard keep going down the road for another 2 miles where you'll see another BF Goodwrench billboard. Take that road to the right and go on up for 0.2 miles and take a left up the hill. Once at the top do a u-turn to see a farmhouse and a windmill, that's Valley View. From there shoot straight down back to the road but just cross it and keep driving in a straight line cutting through the tracks. You’ll come upon an oval track with a huge boulder in the middle and that's Playground SR21. It’s 1 mile from the windmill to the boulder.

    Canyon Lake
Go forward down the dirt road to to the left and find Rattlesnake Ridge Track. From there pull a U-turn to the water's edge and follow it till you find Broken bottle Beach, you'll hit it before the bridge. Get back on the paved road and keep driving down until it takes a sharp right turn and there's a steep hill before the water. Turn around and you'll see some plateaus with cacti on it. Drive up there to find Lake View. Look back at the lake and take the road to the right until you see the marina. Jump down to the water's edge and follow it around until you reach Flip Flow Beach. It’s just under a mile from the docks of the marina to the discovery, from that turn to the right to find the dirt road. Take that until you see the white observatory looking buildings on the mesa. Climb up there and discover Lowell Observatory.

    Cocono Island
For Reference, the sun is to the West
Look to your right at the start and see the huge mountain. Climb to the tippity top of it to find Top of the World. If you look out at the water around you, you should see a big white Lighthouse to the East, a Broken Bridge to the North and a set of islands mostly separated from the big island to the Southwest. These are 3 separate discoveries but go for the lighthouse first. Head down the mountain towards the lighthouse; it is 1.8 miles from top of the world to Lighthouse Lookout. Drive back to the road in the island and take a right, to follow it to the north side of the island. It is a couple mile drive but keep looking to your right. Eventually you'll find a bridge that's blocked off. Drive through the barriers to find Bridge Out. Pull a U-Turn and go straight over the terrain South until you hit a group of buildings, there's Capitol City. It’s barely 0.2 Miles from the road. Head back to the road and take a left to the West. Another long drive but keep looking to the right for an island alone in the water. The destination is almost exactly 5 miles from the bridge. Try to drive out to it and find Island Hopping. You’ll get stuck in the water.

    Lake Powell
Drive to the big plant down the dirt road to meet up with the paved road. Take the paved road down for awhile past the plant and after you take a sharp right there is a big power plant to the left of the road, jump over there to find Powell Solar Plant. Pause the game and press restart. Drive to the left through all the brushes and stuff until you come upon a race track that crosses a canyon. Jump in the canyon and drive in it a bit to find Antelope Canyon. Turn back to the beginning and take a right on the road. Once you reach the Cisco Burger billboard, take the dirt road under it to the right. On your way up there's 3 outcroppings on the big hill, 2nd to the left from the road is Lake View. Looking at the lake, see the dirt road track and drive to it. Whispering Winds Track Discovered. Keep driving forward back to the road and take a right. A mile or so down you'll reach a bridge, cross it. Once on the other side stay to the left shoulder and look for a peninsula with a lot of trees on it. Go on it to find Juniper Hill.

When you hit the lake turn around and take a right at the road and follow it. Once you see the road take a right to go over a bridge, cut to the left up the hills and through the forest to find Mogollon Speedway about 0.2-0.3 miles from the road. Head back to the road and after the bridge over the stream look to your left for a Red Barn and carnival rides. In 3rd person you can see the barn from the bridge. Go there and get Baltman Farm.

    Nevada

    Painted Desert
Drive down the road and find Sand Snakes, you can't miss it. Continue down the road until you see a BF Goodwrench Billboard and take the left dirt road up the hill. Do NOT take the trail up the hill to the radio antenna, that's too far left. Once you reach the top of the hill you'll see some dirt banked turns to the left. Drive onto the track area to find Broken Axle Track. Go back to the road and take a left. Drive down until you’re at the big green Socko Billboard; take a left to the sand dunes to find the Coral Snake Dunes. Continue over them and in a big track area with some circles in the dirt you'll discover Desert Playground. Continue north so the sun is to your left and you'll get back on the road.
