Obtaining your Chocobo Whistle will either be easy or annoying depending on the city in which you chose to raise your Chocobo.

* First, talk to the Chocobo raising NPC, and (s)he will tell you to go to San d'Oria to get your Chocobo Whistle
* After talking to Hantileon in Southern San d'Oria (I-11), inside the chocobo stables (upstairs), he will state that you have to return and check your bond with your chocobo, as sometimes they hide things. This does not mean that you have to have a high affection level. I found the Handkerchief with an affection level of 2.
* Now, when you Go on a Walk, you get the option to search for an item or to watch over your chocobo. When it says "Your Chocobo is completely absorbed in its current activities", choose the search option. You now have a chance of obtaining a Handkerchief.
o Occasionally the Chocobo will detect your Search and it will fail.
o A successful search does not necessarily result in finding the item. In that case, the item is not located in this area, and you should continue to look in the other 2 areas. The location does not randomly reset each day.
* When you obtain the Handkerchief, return to San d'Oria and speak to Hantileon to receive your Chocobo Whistle.
o Note that you cannot call your chocobo with the Chocobo Whistle until you register it with the VCS trainer where you traded your egg.
* Once you have completed this quest and have your whistle, you may retire your current chocobo, raise a new one and register to call it without re-doing this quest. Your whistle will call your new chocobo after you pay 250g.
* If your bond with your chocobo is exceptionally strong, you will receive a Dirty Handkerchief, which is also used for obtaining the Chocobo Whistle. When giving the Dirty Handkerchief to Hantileon in Southern San d'Oria, he will say:

"You gave this to Chocobo when it was still a chick, didn't you? It looks like Chocobo held this item very dear. Your bond with your chocobo seems very strong. I have no qualms about entrusting you with this now."

* If you drop your whistle, it is possible to obtain a new one. Trade the VCS Card from the Chocobo you would like to use to the VCS Handler where you raised your Chocobo. You may then select "New Chocobo Whistle" from a menu. Please note, you WILL have to pay 20,000 gil for the new whistle.

Finally got this dumb achievement today, thought I'd share the whole process since the wiki seems to assume you have an adult Chocobo already. The good news is that there's another achievement for raising a chocobo to 29 days, so this effort for an adult choboco isn't totally wasted.

For this achievement you need the Chocobo Whistle, and as with everything in this game, it's not simple. The first step is acquiring a Chocobo egg. It's possible to get this from some Notorious Monsters, and Damih down the stairs near the Auction House in RuLude Gardens sometimes sells them as well. However neither are guaranteed, so you can do a quest instead.

If you talk to Brutus in the Chocobo Stables in Upper Jueno, 2 quests will start, Chocobo on the Loose is the one you care about (it's started after the cutscene with the Chocobo wanting to get away, let him out to start it). Talk to Brutus again, then head out to La Theine Plateau. In the northwest corner of the E5 square are some chocobo foorprints, interact with them for a cutscene. Return to Brutus and talk to him again.

Now head to Southern Sandoria and talk to Hantileon at the Chocobo stables (he is inside the building by the pen). During the conversation you'll be prompted for a response, answer all 3 and then answer the only choice you have. Return to Brutus in Jueno again and talk to him, then wait a VanaDiel day and talk to him again for a Chocobo Egg. I had to wait a few in-game days though, not sure why.

Once you have the egg go back to Hantileon in Southern Sandoria and trade him the egg. Talk to him again and then choose "set up a care schedule" and then pick plan 1 and choose basic care for 7 days. I'm going to assume you don't care about your chocobo's stats and just want the achievements. If you want info on raising a chocobo properly, check this link :

Regardless of whethere you want a good chocobo or not it's apparently possible for the chocobo to temporarily run away, which can be annoying especially when you want an achievement, so you'll have to give it some level of basic attention to avoid this. Shurag greens are great to feed it, as they increase its affection. Taking it for a walk also helps. Not strictly necessary, but can save you a bit of trouble down the line and doesn't take much effort. Maybe 5 minutes each day. I found quite a bit of Sharug greens in the auction house under weapons > ammo and misc > pet items.

You need to wait 7 days now (it won't even hatch until the 4th day). Thankfully this is earth days and not in-game days (which are under an hour) because there's nothing like waiting a goddamn week to make any progress.

After a week check back and get a detailed report, you'll be given a handkerchief. You'll also be able to name the chocobo, do so (option in menu) just to be safe. I'm not entirely clear what triggers the next need to dirty up the handkerchief but get no indication when it's done. I just leveled up to 75 in my current job (took a few vanadiel days) and then went back to the trainer and he took it.

Now you have to wait until day 29 (yep, earth days!) to have a shot at this achievement. On day 29 he will become an adult and you have the chance of getting the handkerchief when you go out on a walk with it after talking to Hantileon in southern sandoria (he'll mention you can get it if you prove your bond is strong). When you go on a walk, you'll either get a message that it's very happy, or that it is completely absorbed in its activities. If it says very happy searching will just make your chocobo stop you.

If it says completely absorbed, you want to search now and hopefully you'll get the handkerchief. If not it seems you won't get it in this "area". So if you did small walk and you didn't get it, try regular or long. You may get events tied to other quests instead of a chance to search for this, so this may take a few days.

One last thing, it seems how hungry the chocobo is affects how much energy they use for walks. So it might be a good idea to feed them before you start walking. If you can't find sharug greens in the auction house there's quite a few other kinds of food in there you can use.

Once you have the handkerchief, talk to Hantileon and he will give you your whistle. As with all achievements in FFXI, you need to talk to a traveling bard to unlock it. Check this list to find one available to you :

NOTE : Once you have the whistle, you can retire your chocobo and get another achievement. However, once you retire it you cannot try for a whistle, so make sure you do it AFTER you have the chocobo whistle.
