Hard mode is only selectable from the main menu. It can be selected at any point in your playthrough, and acts as an on demand new game+.

Again, selecting it will put you at the beginning of the game. Only do so when you are ready. You retain your character, vocation levels, and xp. All of your gear (and your pawn's gear) will be placed in item storage for you to access at the first inn. All placed portcrystals will stay.

Hard mode doubles enemy damage and massively accelarates stamina drain. You will also earn double exp and large amounts of gold from enemies.

Two playthroughs are required for the "The Ever Turning Wheel" achievement so there's not much point in starting out on hard for your first playthrough. I did my first run on hard and was one shotted by almost every single enemy. More annoying than tough because you can save on command but there's still no reason to put yourself through it.

If you are struggling on hard mode:
-Enhance your gear at a blacksmith. The first level is often quite cheap.
-Ensure your pawns are at least your level. Consider paying RC for higher level pawns to carry you. If somebody is on your friend's list you can rent their pawn for free, no matter what level they are.
-Look up enemy weaknesses and use a mage with those elements. (Grigori is weak to dark, the Evil Eye is weak to holy).
-Consider switching your vocation to sorcerer or Magick Archer. It's much safer to not climb on the thing trying to eat you.
