    Very easy achievement you can earn at the very first screen in the game. In Shadowgate, "USE" a lit torch on "SELF" a total of 3 times so that it'll initiate the death sequence from it as you will not immediately kill yourself by using the torch a single time.

    Once you see the Grim Reaper, the achievement will unlock!

    PtI remember playing this on my friend's Nintendo back in nineteen-eighty-something and I don't remember having as much trouble with it then as I am now. ...How do I "Use" a lit torch on my"Self"?

    After going into the first room (eyes at top, 'wizard is a fool', two doors, etc) and taking the two torches, I can "Use" a torch, and it lights the torch. I then have to select Torch again, and it just tells me that the torches are burning brightly and I don't have to light any more. If I hit "Self" first, it just tells me it's an odd thing for a brave knight to do. What am I missing?

    Robster80Pt, soon as you start the game, click on Use and then highlight the lit torch icon in the upper left-hand corner of your list. It should then ask "What would you like to use it on?" Then click on Self and it'll state you burned yourself. Repeat this step 2 more times and you'll burn to death.

    planting42Just a note that I had to click the flame itself to select the lit torch. Clicking below that seemed to select the 1st item in the inventory.
