Generic Recruits are any characters that you need to pay scrap to get onto your team. These characters are available in Towns and other spaces where there isn't a battle. Your goal is to not recruit any of them during your time through the game. In other words, you only get 6 units to place max after getting your last character type (1 each of Berserker, Ranger, Priest, Ice Mage, Knight, and Dragon).

I would recommend the following:

1) Turn on Hero Mode in the options menu. This will help ensure you don't accidentally purchase extra characters because it will always give you a warning if you accidentally click the Recruit menu option.

2) Turn up the Experience and Scrap bonuses to 300% and Turn down the penalty for loss to 0%. Altering this will not have any effect on achievements on unlocking, but it will save a lot of time for grinding. Leveling up your units or having the best equipment possible for everyone will make a huge difference. Especially at the beginning, a couple of levels can spell the difference between failure and perfection. The level ups for your Main character also help raise your starting Psy which means you can easily level characters at the start.

3) Remember your spells. Spamming spells usually won't be too hard as you don't have a lot of units to manage. You'll have tons of spare Psy to deal with the trickier/faster enemies.

4) Have your team in the best positions for maximum killing. This should be obvious, but you'll want to max out your ability to deal damage to enemies. In particular, here is what you should consider:

Berserker/Knight - Ends or corners. They have the shortest range so they need to be in positions to get the most hits. These characters can easily wipe out many enemies if placed in spots where all routes hit.

Ranger/Dragon - This takes some practice, but consider maximizing the tiles they can hit. You'll want them slightly buried in squares so their range is hitting all squares. The dragon has less requirement here since it has melee and ranged abilities, but you'll want to place it in a similar manner.

Priest - Corners would be best, but sometimes you are limited here. The priest technically has the best way to dispel the smoke enemies that have high evasion. You'll want them close to your other units but also able to hit as many paths as possible so they maximize their dispel possibilities. On levels where you can't get all paths covered, try to analyze the wave list to determine which lines will need the dispel more than the others.

Ice Mage - The Ice Mage has the toughest placement. It was my last choice during my run in standard mode and thus always got a worse spot on maps. It's similar to the Dragon/Priest in that it has both close and ranged abilities depending on its level. The slow down will be the biggest advantage.

In general, my placement usually had the 6 units placed close to each other in order to play off their strengths.

In terms of the end of the game, I don't know if it matters which path you take to finish the game. I personally took the route into the cave and thus that was my finish, but I went back afterwards and took the escape option as well.
