How to unlock the Heart Breaker achievement

To make things easier, killing a thargoid scout (the smaller alien ships) count towards this achievement (as well as the Heartless achievement). I have not killed a single thargoid interceptor (the big ones).

This can be and was achieved solo in an Alliance Chieftain, no engineering to the weapons or shields, no special anti-thargoid weapons or defences either.

I was consistently able to find the scouts by travelling to a system with a 0 population (in the galaxy map, population count will show up on the left when you highlight a star). I flew around waiting for unidentified signal sources to spawn. After scanning, I would only be interested in Non-human signal source level 4 (the level pops up shortly after the source type). A level 4 generally gave me around 5 to 6 scouts once I dropped out of supervruise but it also meant that there was typically another NPC ship or two, this serve to distract the scouts so that only 1 or 2 will attack you at any one time. A level 5 source seemed to have far more scouts and no distracting NPC’s. A level 6 source would have a Thargoid Interceptor (you can find black boxes and escape pods at these points though)

The scouts are not necessarily easy targets but a couple gimballed multicannons did the job in about a minute of dogfighting. Unguided missiles were very useful if you manage to score a hit (seeker missiles are useless as the Thargoid causes them to miss every time). Watch out for the caustic attack as that will slowly cause your hull strength to degrade (a quick stop at the nearest station will clean your hull though).

HurballWhen you say "systems with 0 population" do you mean in the bubble or anywhere in particular? Thanks for the solution btw, glad to hear the smaller ships count.

CraziDutchmanI was just outside of the bubble. Will test it out a little better and update the solution.

Lurking LawyerPlenty of threat level 4 non-human signal sources in Umbila at the moment - that's in the Bubble, 10 LYs or so from Diaguandri. They typically have 4 scouts. I also saw a few level 3 NHSS - they seem to have 2 scouts.

Other than caustic damage, they don't pose much threat if you're in a decently engineered ship.

o DEEVIUS oThey are now right outside the bubble, the community challenge is now to kill them and/or retrieve parts from them.

I'm assuming I can head to a system with a recently damaged starport and look for these 'non-human signal sources', but wouldn't trying to find a threat 0 or 1 be easier if I'm alone with a relatively poor ship?

o DEEVIUS oTo answer my own question: it appears that the lowest threat level when a Thargoid is present is 3, but I wouldn't even attempt this unless you have decent ship.

SchinderdivIn response to the above - I just tried dropping in on a NHSS level 4 threat with my Viper MkIII (with level 5 engineered shields but no engineered weapons yet) out of curiosity and although I lasted several minutes against 4 scouts - I still had no chance. I was curious what I could do solo and now I know and you do too, haha.

I'll be heading off to Sag A soon, but if anyone with more powerful ships wants to wing up and hunt some scouts with me when I'm back, send me a friend request/message. I'll probably engineer some weapons too, since I'm still far off from affording a tougher ship. Keep in mind I'm still a novice at dogfighting too, but am learning.
