The Hidden Ones and Curse of the Pharaohs DLC added new slots to each upgrade item in the Crafting sections of the Gear tab. And Curse added a new crafting material called Shards of a Star (used similarly to silica and carbon crystals). You find these shards in loot containers and chests in Locations all over the new map. Defeating the random Pharaoh's Shadows that menace the citizenry also gives shards.

The top slots of each upgrade item require shards. So when you have enough of them, craft a qualifying upgrade item and the achievement is yours.

These afterlife maps have craters where lots of shards are laying around for the taking:
    - Aaru - Nut's Gift
    - Heb Sed - Orion's Crater

You can also farm shards from killing large scorpions in Aaru. The scorpions are plentiful and may or may not repopulate frequently. Aaru is the easier of the 4 afterlife maps, but you can farm whichever one you're comfortable with. These maps also have replenishing supplies of soft leather, wood and metals. Scorpion Pincers also sell for 70 drachma a piece. Some scorpion caves have extra shards laying around.

EDIT: I just cleared all the scorpions from Aaru and they didn't come back. So maybe they don't repopulate quickly or at all sometimes. I even exited to Valley of the Kings and came back in, but they still didn't reappear. Had to wait a good while.

There are two main ways to gain star shards: defeating Pharaoh Shadows and hunting scorpions in the afterlife. Pharaoh Shadows are worth 3 shards and scorpions are worth 2 shards. The afterlife location of Aaru (the first afterlife location unlocked) is the best way to grind out shards. I recommend unlocking the ability Favor of Osiris to replenish ammo automatically in the afterlife so that you can continue hunting scorpions. Once you have enough shards (20 for your first upgrade per crafted item, increases by 10 subsequently), go into your gear and upgrade a previously fully upgraded item, like your hidden blade or quiver.

The method i use is to go to the Royal Palace south of Aten and kill the three scorpions there, they drop 2 Shards of a Star each, then after you've killed all three, open up the quest menu and use the “Reload quest objective” option, and they will reappear again, just run up the stairs and to the right when you re-spawn.
After some time of grinding other places, i found this way to be the fastest and easiest solution to gain Shards.
Just to point out, there is no quest to kill the scorpions, they will just be there, it does not matter what quest you got selected, they just seem to re-spawn every time you select Reload quest objective.

brummiechrislaugh yeah, reload quest objective is by far the easiest way to farm shards. Following DJ Batfink excellent suggestion it was an absolute piece of cake to grind out a large number of shards.
