There are a total of three different bosses that you can encounter in Runestone Keeper. They are the Nightmare Fiend, Ancient Memories and The One.

Killing either Ancient Memories or The One will unlock this achievements. I personally killed The One when it popped for me.

These two bosses will not appear in normal mode, you must be playing in Nightmare or Chaos. Unfortunately, Nightmare Fiend still has a chance to appear instead of them in Nightmare and Chaos mode. So, you'll not only have to make it to the last floor of the dungeon, you'll also have to be lucky enough to spawn the proper boss - and then kill it!

As a personal anecdote - when I first started running Chaos mode I would encounter Nightmare Fiend frequently. My first 5 or 6 runs were Nightmare Fiend so I originally thought that Ancient Memories was going to be an extremely rare boss encounter.

The more that I played, though, and the better that I got - the more often I began to encounter Ancient Memories or The One. In fact, my last three runs were all The One. I *believe* that the game may throw the harder bosses at your if your character is in a stronger position in terms of equipment and whatnot when you reach the level. I could be wrong - it could be totally random - but I definitely noticed a correlation between how I was doing and which boss I encountered.

Ancient Memories spawns with four "helpers" during the fight. Random events throughout the dungeon can prevent these helpers from spawning and in turn make the fight easier. The events that I know of are as follows:
_____________________________________________________________________
"The blood on this floor indicates that a massacre probably took place here. You can see a pair of bloody eyes staring at you from the mist, he seems exhausted, but you can feel the hunger... for blood."

- Kill the other creatures before approaching -> +15 Soul or +3 mana, and Wolf Paw Mark -> If you get the mark, the wolf (Jones) does not appear for the boss fight.

- Approach the bloody eyes
- Counter attack (Strength check?) -> Success -> Get Wolf Paw Mark, +5 HP -> If you get the mark, the wolf (Jones) does not appear for the boss fight.

- Try to survive. (Stamina check?) -> Success -> Get Wolf Paw Mark -> If you get the mark, the wolf (Jones) does not appear for the boss fight.

- Cast magic to protect yourself. (Intelligence check?). ->
Success -> Get Wolf Paw Mark -> If you get the mark, the wolf (Jones) does not appear for the boss fight.
Fail -> Life -10

"Different body parts are hooked..."

- I had my fate under control...(Guy) -> Dead Pupil (Event Item) -> If you get this item, the griffin (Jack) does not appear for the boss fight.
- I have never regretted my choice...(Svafa) -> Nothing Happened.
- (Option that wasn't be silent) (Hogg) -> Eye of Death (Event Item)
- Be silent. (Guy) -> +10 Mana
- Be silent. (Svafa) -> Dead Pupil (Event Item) -> If you get this item, the griffin (Jack) does not appear for the boss fight.

My strategy for Chaos is the same that I mentioned for some various Runeword acheivements . . .

My preferred set up is Merlyn and the God of Evil. I wield a 2H staff and increase his Stamina to 5 early, then dump the rest into his Intelligence. If I find some nice gear I may end up throwing a point into Dexterity or Strength if it's required, but I usually try to get those points through events.

A high damage staff (11 or 14) with Chain attack couple with God of Evils self-healing makes staying topped off much easier. The fact that your weapon is Intelligence based makes it a ranged weapon so you won't have to worry when encountering ranged enemies.

Keep some high-armor equipment around to change into right before entering a new floor and then change into gear with effects that you like afterwards. Reflecting damage based on your armor damage is great, + Life when revealing tiles, + Mana when getting a kill and + hit rate are some of my favorite modifiers.
