For this achievement you need to scan all species on one planet. Follow the tutorial missions until you receive your scanner and start scanning everything with cn_LT. You can check how many species are on your current planet by pressing cn_start and going to Discoveries and Fauna. Remember to look in the sky for flying species and there may be some species that are underground only or water only so you may have to do some exploring to find them all.

Once you have found all species for that planet, hold cn_A on the paw print in the upper right corner of the Fauna tab under Discoveries and it will turn gold and you will get the achievement.

There must be animals on the planet for you to get credit. Barren planets with no wildlife do not count.

UltraAmbiguousI also got the achievement by coincidentally landing on a planet with only one animal. This was only the 3rd planet I had visited since beginning the game.

Achievement popped for me not by clicking on a paw print, but clicking on a message bar directly below the bar with the option to change from flora to fauna to mineral with LB and RB. The bar said something like, "1 Fauna found" or something like that.

Scanning the planet pre-landing didn't offer any info regarding wildlife that I could understand, however, there was an "ANOMALY" reading if that helps???. No trees or bushes and no boulders or water anywhere. Basically, a desert, but rock not sand.

TheNextMadKingIs there anyone else that saw how none of these achievements ended in a 5 or 0 and decided there were more interesting games to play?

Rista B@TheNextMadKing, thought about but decided to give it a chance. But like some others have commented a lot of basic stuff in the game is really poorly explained.

I have found that a very simple way of unlocking this achievement is to find an exotic world. Despite the drawback of being very rare, they only ever have one type of Fauna that makes its home on the planet. If you don't want to take the time to categorize every Fauna on a more common planet and like exploring, this would be a good way to do it.
