Was able to get to 88 or so by the end of the 1st season playing most my games on 9 min. quarters. I was able to achieve 90 directly from 88 though. When the skill cap breaks past the meter for the third time, I was able to go from 88-90. This happened in the Conf. Semi-finals and it was quite pricey overall. With the 9 min quarters and playing a majority of the games I still only made about 1000-2000 VC per game. So I would recommend saving it if you can throughout the levels because the further along you get the more expensive it gets. Just for 3 "dash's" for the 88-90 was 13k ish.
It is really all about the grind and if you want to skip the VC portion there are micro-transactions if you feel so inclined to spend your money. I didn't and was able to get there but I could see how one would want too if you have the disposable income for it.
I'd say overall it took my around 95-100 games to get to 90 with more than 3/4 of those being a starter playing lots of minutes.
