This is certainly a challenge, but it depends on how many thing you feel like doing to make it easier on yourself. A few things to know:

-You will take more damage, maybe 1.5x as much. Bosses wreck your life meter.
-There are NO pick-ups in levels except for random bolt drops. No health, no weapon energy, no extra lives, no Energy Tanks. None.
-Check-points are identical to Normal, thankfully.
-Normal enemies, especially one-hit kill enemies, now take 2-3 hits, which can throw off your rhythm if you're used to playing on Normal or Casual.
-A few bosses have expanded attacks, and Wily's missiles fire way faster.

However - enemies drop a ton of bolts. I mean, lots. So items, upgrades, etc. are typically easy to come by. After going through it myself, I honestly don't think it's possible to beat Superhero mode without ever using Energy Tanks, at least for a few bosses. Success against bosses usually involves hitting them with their weakness as quick as possible, and some bosses (Impact Man, for example) turn invulnerable often enough that you take damage while waiting to dish it out.

Here are some tips for success:

1. Go to a level with some respawning enemies and grind out some bolts. The yellow floating enemies in Block Man's level will get you 500-1000 pretty quickly. Buy Energy Tanks (at least 5) before actually attempting any levels.

2. Beat Tundra Man first. His level is easy, and so is he, even with just the Mega Buster. More importantly, his weapon is incredibly useful in basically every stage. It has full-screen vertical reach, a wide column, and it can take out most shielded enemies in one hit.

3. Most weapons that bosses are weak against also have application in their levels. For example, the ice weapon can freeze the forest fire in Torch Man's stage, making that level go from one of the most frustrating to a cakewalk. This is especially true since there are no gear drops to cool down if you use the speed gear. Other essential applications: the acid shield helps protect you from all the projectiles in Impact Man's stage being shot/thrown at you, etc.

4. This is a big one - the game lets you auto-map a rapid fire button to the controller. I replaced Rush Coil with turbo fire, and it absolutely obliterates enemies, especially mid-bosses. It almost feels like cheating, but it's an in-game option, and the extra damage you take in Superhero mode makes it feel justified.

5. You can buy extra E-Tanks, lives, and Weapon Tanks between Wily stages. The boss rush in Wily Stage 3 can be rough, I recommend being fully stocked. If you use E-Tanks in a fight and die anyway, you may run out.

6. Using the Power Gear against bosses can waste them - Torch Man, for example, is the easiest to defeat with just Power Gear moves when paired with the ice weapon.

7. The Yellow Devil comes in faster too, but the Power Gear with the chaser mine makes short work of him, especially if you're well-stocked with E-Tanks.

It helps if you've beaten the game 1-2 times so you know the levels and can get through them efficiently. Minimizing damage in levels is essential since (again) there are no health drops.

Finally, not all of the upgrades for sale are available right away. Here are some important ones and when they appear:

-100 Gear uses/activations - speed gear fix (move at normal speed during speed use)
-4 bosses - Rush Jet (automatically given, no need to purchase)
-Wily Stage 1 - Power Shield
-Wily Stage 3 (Boss Rush) - Cooling System (gear powers last longer)

That's it! Just be patient and you'll get through it fine.
