This achievement is very easy to get once you know where to start the quest line. Defeating the Sphinx is necessary to get one of the four Isu artifacts required to access Atlantis. If you prefer a video guide, I've attached it above (all credit to for it goes to manix), although it does not contain all of the possible riddles/associated answers.

The quest that leads you to the Sphinx, called "Lore of the Sphinx," becomes available once you

You'll be sent to Boeotia to find the Strange Ruins near the southern part of Lake Kopais (screenshot by vg247.com).

Once there, talk to Gorgias, the man standing near the Sphinx statue, who will send you to go find his apprentice, Pibos, and a medallion he has in his possession. Pibos was last seen near the Tomb of Menoikeus, which is to the northeast of the Scorched Rolling Plains.

Upon arrival you'll discover Pibos' corpse. It quickly becomes apparent that whatever killed him also ate the medallion you were sent to find, so you're now off to kill an Alpha Lion wo resides nearby, conveniently highlighted by your quest marker. Defeating the lion is no more difficult than killing any of the other Alpha Animals in the game and, once the lion's dead, it will drop the medallion you're looking for. Once you defeat the Alpha Lion, you get credit for completing "Lore of the Sphinx" and you'll get a new quest entitled "Awaken the Myth."

Next, head back to the Strange Ruins where you initially met Gorgias. You'll find his body on the ground and that the statue has disappeared; additionally, there is now an option to "interact" with the statue's pedestal using cn_Y. If it's daytime, you'll be told that you should wait and try again at night, so use cn_back to meditate if needed. Once darkness falls and you interact with the pedestal, a cut scene will initiate.

The Sphinx now appears and asks you to answer three riddles. In the lead-up to the riddles the game leads you to believe that you can fight the Sphinx, but that's not actually an option. In order to defeat her, you must solve three riddles, picked randomly by the game from a pool of twelve. Should you answer one of the riddles incorrectly, the Sphinx will dress you down and then blast you with a laser beam, instantly killing you and forcing you to restart the sequence.

The possible riddles and their answers follow:

    1) "At night they come without being fetched, and by day they are lost without being stolen."

    2) "What is large, yet never grows; has roots that cannot be seen; and is taller than trees?"

    3) "What can bring back the dead; make you cry, make you laugh, make you young; is born in an instant, yet lasts a lifetime."

    4) "What can run, but never walks; has a mouth, but never talks; has a head, but never weeps; has a bed, but never sleeps?"

    5) "I’m alive, but without breath; I’m as cold in life as in death; I’m never thirsty, though I always drink."

    6) "I create my lair with earthen string, and dispatch my prey with a biting sting."

    7) "Some try to hide, some try to cheat; but time will show, we always will meet. Try as you might to guess my name."

    8) "Never resting, never still; moving silently from hill to hill; it does not walk, run or trot; all is cool where it is not."

    9) "What is always old and sometimes new; never sad, sometimes blue; never empty, but sometimes full; never pushes, always pulls?"

    10) "This thing all things devour: birds, beasts, trees, flowers; gnaws iron, bites steel; grinds hard stones to meal; slays kings, ruins towns; and beats high mountains down."

    11) "As small as your thumb, I am light in the air. You may hear me before you see me, but trust that I’m here."

    12) "In spring I am gay in handsome array; in summer more clothing I wear; when colder it grows, I fling off my clothes; and in winter quite naked appear."

Once you correctly answer the third riddle, the Sphinx will tell you to push the panels on the nearby pillars that correspond to the answers to the riddles you were asked (you can do so in any order). Once you've pressed all three, go back to the Sphinx and talk to her by pressing cn_Y.

If you got all three panels right, then the Sphinx dies; if you didn't, similarly to getting the answer to a riddle wrong, the Sphinx will kill you instead.

Congratulations - you did it! For defeating the Sphinx, your achievement will pop and you will receive
