The Battle of Tobruk is the 2nd of 3 missions in the Desert War – Axis Campaign. The challenge mode limits what you can do with the air supports (extra AA-guns). The real difficulty is that it is easy to over commit your forces and you take too many losses. Note: most pictures in guide are from 3-star run, couldn’t keep scout plane in air long enough to screenshot positions. Doctrine:
You earn enough reinforcements that the different troop bonus at the beginning doesn’t affect much. Tips:
1. Mines. They are in front of every defensive position, but not the sides.
2. Save often on your 3-star run. Because reasons.
3. Don’t rush. A quick attack before weakening any position will cause a large amount of losses. Objective 1:
Destroy 1 of 3 defensive positions. There’s AT/AA-guns and tanks in sandbag protection, along with infantry with mortars in the trenches. The left position is the smallest, but within mutual support range from center if not careful. The center is largest (Have fun with that). Right is middle size and isolated from the others.
Capture both airfields. Both have defenses like Objective 1 (but bigger) and whichever one you attack first will be reinforced by the surviving units from Objective 1.
Eliminate the defense line. Heavily fortified line, but there is an approach from the east that is less guarded.
Capture Tobruk. If 3-star run use the airstrikes (clears almost everything), but the challenge run will barely scratch them do to the AA-guns stropping the planes before they can attack.
I lost 4 vehicles, 44 infantry and 14 aircraft (AA-guns) mostly to when I accidently got too close with my infantry without tank support. I got the 2nd and 3rd star during the end of Objective 3 up to taking position 1 of Objective 4 (depending on which run).
