An excellent way of ranking up is to play the Showdown Series Large playlist.

There are 3 different game types in this playlist and they are…

Most Wanted
Name Your Weapon
Hostile Territory

Now below I am going to write some notes on the ability card loadouts that have helped me thus far to succeed in this playlist. As of writing this I’m currently rank 50 and I have the following ability cards active for when I play the Showdown series.

Dead Eye
Slow and Steady (unlocked at rank 24) – This essentially allows you to survive multiple headshots whilst your Deadeye is active, you cannot sprint or run whist this is active. However, you can still lock onto enemy players resulting in higher chance of eliminating them. As of writing this it is at rank 2 and I can survive around 3 – 4 headshots before perishing.

1st Passive slot unlocked at rank 10
Eye For An Eye (unlocked at rank 29) – This allows you to restore more of your Dead Eye when you get headshot kills, at the moment I have it set to rank 2 and it restores about 20%, of my the Dead Eye Circle for each headshot kill. Note getting headshot kills whilst using your Dead Eye will not refill your Dead Eye meter,

2nd Passive slot unlocked at rank 20
The Unblinking Eye (unlocked at rank 26) – Your Dead Eye and Eagle Eye drain a little slower. Really good when combined with the Slow And Steady and Eye For An Eye abilities. This means that you can use Dead Eye for longer periods of time. I currently have it at rank 1 and can use Dead Eye for around 20 seconds before the Circle disappears.

Another good option is Cold Blooded (unlocked at rank 36) which will regenerate your health over the next five seconds once you've killed someone. Having this combined with Strange Medicine is really good I think, as you can regenerate your health even faster.

3rd Passive slot unlocked at rank 40
Strange Medicine (unlocked at Rank 32) – This allows your health the regenerate when you inflict damage. However your health regenerates twice as slow when out of combat stood still for example. So to maximise this ability you’ll want to be constantly damaging enemy players to regenerate your health. I plan on purchasing this when I hit rank 40.

When I got to rank 40 I replaced The Unblinking Eye with Cold Blooded.

How to counter Slow and Steady
Best way of countering Slow and Steady is to have the ability card called Landon's Patience which is unlocked at rank 18. This card essentially means that between shots you do slightly more damage. This is excellent against slow and steady users as you can 3 shot people with the Litchfield or 2 shot them with the Springfield Rifle. You will want to be aiming for the body when against people who are using Slow and Steady when using the ability card. You will also want to have slow and steady on yourself.

Useful things you can do in Free Roam in between play sessions.
Whilst in free roam you’ll want to be on the lookout for Indian Tobacco which is excellent allowing you to craft Potent Snake Oil and when you drink this it will restore your Dead Eye circle completely.

You can find Indian Tobacco in this location just south of Valentine in free roam:

Indian Tobacco looks like this:

Once you have Indian Tobacco head back to your camp to craft the Potent Snake Oil. If you want more Indian Tobacco, search for a new session head back there and repeat this process.

Below are some nice recent clips of me using the Slow and Steady ability loadout.

If you enjoy Horse racing consider reading this section below.
How to never run out of horse supplies
There's a place called Rathskeller Fork which is north east of Cholla Springs in New Austin. In this location you can find horse supplies such as Horse Reives, Horse Medicine and Horse Stimulants. This is excellent if you plan on free roaming loads. Also you can store 20 of these items at one time. So you can search for a new session and come back here and they will respawn.

Thanks again!

I wanted to try and give an alternate and updated solution post 1.06 patch. BabyishDuck's solution is still totally valid and still probably the fastest way up the ladder. However I find trying to climb the ladder up to 50 all the 100+ player base will eat you alive in PVP.

I like this solution because it give a lot of xp and money and there is an AFK component to it which makes it nice during this crazy grind. With a small group. Replay the mission "More than one way to earn a buck". Clear the fort, blow 2/3 ammo stashes then leave the fort and set a timer for 28 min.

You are now free to do whatever! If you want to go AFK pull out your catalogue (hold cn_left) and come back once your timer goes off and finish the mission. The delay will grab you around $60 and 855 xp

Obviously these gains can be increased by hunting and selling animal parts. Working on buckles. Or playing during xp boosted weeks.

Hope this helps somebody to finally finish this crazy grind in a broken "BETA"

Good Hunting!
