Before you go, try to have the scanner with you.
To anyone who wants to find the island before the quest marker or needs help finding it after the questmarkers have disapeared, this is for you.
I found it hard to find floater island a second time after my locational cordinates disapeared.
Some say to look for the low clouds in the sky that seem to touch the water, thats where the island is. well, that didnt exist for me.
The island for me was 1200m south by south west.
What worked best for me was to set the compass in the middle of S & SW, which looks like this.
    S..|..|..>|<..|..|..SW.
(> & < do not show on compass, this is just for showing you which heading to use on the compass dashes ingame)

Then move to your right a little so you are looking at a slightly SW by S heading, like this,
    S..|..|..|..>|<..|..SW
Then travel forwards till you come to the island(1150m)
(You can tell how far you've come by turning around and seeing how far your lifepod is)
As for the achievement, there was 1 to 3 collectibles in the habitats on the island, i cant remember if each had one.
There is a habitat in the middle-ish part of the island and two on each mountain peak (left and right side)
Go to each of them, with scanner in hand make sure everything is scanned, then go inside and look for a data pad.
Outside the middle habitat there is a purple alien keypad on the floor, pick it up for later.
    I hope this helps.
