This is part of the new mining mechanics. To properly mine, you need the following:
Prospector Limpets (to see what's inside the asteroids - they have new functionality now too)
Collector Limpets (I mean, you don't HAVE to but wink - depending on your ship you may want 2)
Refinery (I'd suggest a 10 bin refinery if you can afford it such as a 4A as you will quickly fill it up otherwise)
Mining Laser (for conventional mining - blasting away as usual)
Abrasion Blaster (for surface deposits)
Sub-surface Displacement Missiles (This is the tech you use to tunnel in to an asteroid for the sub-surface deposits)
Seismic Charge Launchers (for cracking asteroids - quite a sight to see)
Pulse Wave Analyzer (for scanning rings or asteroid fields for prime targets. This is a Utility module!)
...and of course, cargo space to hold limpets and your profits!

Shopping for all this can be a pain. If you can access Jameson Memorial in Shinrarta Dezhra or Attilius Orbital in CD-4311917 then all parts *should* be available to you. The former is for reaching Elite in any rank (or being a kickstarter backer) and the latter is for anyone that has prestiged in CQC (rank 50). If you can't reach those locations, you are forced to hunt for the gear you want. Your best bet is high tech economies. If you are in the vicinity of Colonia, you can check Whirling Station in Ogmar. Its where I was able to locate 90% of what I needed to refit for mining.

Now that you (hopefully) have gathered the proper gear, its time to get down to the mining. For this achievement, you will want a Pulse Wave Analyzer, Prospector Limpets and the Sub-surface Displacement Missiles in addition to your regular mining loadout.

Worth mentioning, if you are mapping a planet that has rings, hitting the rings with a probe will highlight the hotspots and detail what the composition is. This is ideal when searching for those lucrative deposits!

Once you drop into a location you intend to mine (remember your ideal spot is a Metallic ring or field with Pristine resources (as seen in the System Map) you want to make sure you are in Analysis Mode which by default is cn_Y + cn_up (if you've reset to the new default keybinds that is) and not Combat Mode. I'd also recommend trying out Night Vision cn_B + cn_left which will improve visibility in most cases. (which Scan using the Pulse Wave Analyzer (similar to the old school honk - hold it down until it scans, there's a bar that denotes progress) and you'll see some rocks that glow yellow/orange for a few seconds. Those are the ones you should pursue. The other rocks will not feature the new mining mechanics.

Now that you've found a target, shoot it with a Prospector Limpet. You'll still get the composition as before and can use it to track traditional mining progress. However, when it hits you'll see a blue glow pass over the rock that exposes some advanced mining targets.

Surface formations are mined by using the Abrasion Blaster (its an energy weapon so you have unlimited shots). Fissures are faults you can launch a Seismic Charge into (you explode the rock and expose surface or sub-surface formations) and are quite the sight to see. Sub-surface formations are the target of this achievement and require use of the Sub-surface Displacement Missiles.

These are limited in ammunition, but I was able to learn how to use it and get this achievement with 2 rank 2 modules equipped. To mine these you need to:
- Ensure the formation is facing you (clicking off will show either a blue top or a grey box. If its grey, its not visible.)
- Target it if you haven't already and fire your Sub-surface Displacement missile at it. To do this, push and hold the trigger you've assigned the weapon to. If it lands near the opening, you'll see a prompt to hold until you want to detonate the charge. You'll see a new UI feature that shows a moving bar on bottom with blue lines occasionally and some red and yellow peaks and valleys on top. The object is to drill (yes, its a drill) into the rock and let go of the trigger in one of the blue zones. This will eject a piece of what's inside. I've seen deposits with as many as 4 ejectable bits inside. A failure (not releasing in a blue zone, not a missed shot) will result in a loss of a piece. For instance, if after ejecting the 1st piece you see you are at 50% integrity on the deposit, the next attempt will either dislodge or destroy the last part.

It takes a bit of finesse to get the drill into the opening of spinning asteroids. Trial and error will only improve your abilities. Once you have dislodged 50 (collection is optional) pieces, the achievement unlocks.
