Every ship has a 'Discovery Scanner' by default. To use it first make sure it's mapped to a Fire group and you'll also need to go into your controls and map a button for your new HUD mode.

Go to: Options - Controls - Mode Switches - down to 'Switch HUD Mode' - there's probably no button that isn't already mapped for you, but I just swapped it for cn_Y+cn_down.

Now when you enter a system you can switch to 'Analysis Mode' and hit the Discovery Scanner like normal. Although the scanner has infinite range it will only fully scan stars, you'll require the further use of a 'Full Spectrum System Scanner' for planets, moons, belts and rings, however you don't need that for this achievement- just find a system that only contains stars scan it and the achievement will unlock.

DurchschnittYes, the update made the "advanced discovery scanner" integrated into every ship by default so it no longer takes up an internal slot.

In my experience, you only need to scan the astronomical bodies in a system and you can see a tracker in the top right corner when you are in the FSS. I don't believe that asteroid clusters are needed. Also, you can only scan rings using the DSS.

I don't think it's worth the time searching for a system with stars only. I think it's easier to just go ahead and scan all the bodies in the system, assuming you are in a system with a reasonable number of bodies. The FSS scans go pretty quick.

o DEEVIUS oIt's your choice I guess, but I scanned at least six 'star only' systems on my way to buying an FSS, and I'm fully maxed out on Explorer rank so I never bothered buying one, I'm too busy now with Thargoid combat and the new mining stuff.

Anyway you'll encounter loads of star only systems as you travel around on your other business, but yeah if you're into exploring it'll probably be worthwhile getting a Full Spectrum and going all out.

Thanks for the confirmation about the discovery scanner toast
