This is super hard to get to without savestates and rewind.

I've gotten close but not quite on the arcade version.

The NES port has nearly identical gameplay, all the secrets, but less graphics.
The hidden flags are there, and so are the underground silos, etc.

You should watch a longplay and memorize where the bosses, enemies come out.

There are great strategies to bomb certain spots on 'area 16', so you wont be
    trapped by shots.

Once you reach the point I show in the video below, thats it, and the the game
just repeats most of the levels again. You will see 2 large circular bases
shooting at you. Once you clear those, you see a forest section.
This is in the first 20 seconds of the video below.

smackthecreepr2Does the achievement still unlock if you use rewind?

negative1neYes, I mentioned that I used them to get this far. I'm not good enough to get this far without them.

BahaumautThere's a cheat/debug mode for the JPN / Famicom version of Xevious. I was able to get it to work on this version, and enabled invincibility with it. Unfortunately, it looks like it doesn't allow you to unlock the achievement with it. Would have been nice to let you breeze through this one, but they must have known about it as well and handled that case.

TheOnlyMattoman I wish the video wasnt AFTER the ending point. Good advice but the video is pointless if the achievement has already popped by the time it plays.

My Toxic Frog 2For anyone curious…. There are no bosses at the end of each stage nor any counter of what stage you are on. You will know you are at the end of one stage and beginning another when you come across a grassy patch that is as wide as your screen and nearly as tall.

I was only to get this achievement by holding down x and y to essentially rapid fire my two shots while using a healthy amount of rewinds. I didn’t keep track of the time it took me but I would estimate this one was about 30-45 minutes. Good luck!
