D0NTMoCKMeBonus level is actually called "special stage" on that screen. theres an emerald surrounded by blocks you have to touch a few times each then they disappear and you can get the emerald. thumbs up though, just wasnt sure and guessed bonus level meant special stage.

I wrote this because it seemed like the other solutions only told part of the story, and having never played Sonic, I was getting confused.

At the title screen (the one that shows Sonic), press Left, Right, Up, Down. There will be a chime. If it doesn't work right, do it again. Once you hear the chime, hold A and press Start.

Scroll down to "Special Stage." Once in here, save your game.

You need to avoid the goal area. There's a Chaos Emerald hidden in here. In the area with a bunch of rings in the center, there will be one wall which is partially transparent. You want to go through this wall, without accidentally falling into the goal area.

You'll find a central area with three jewels on each side, and a bluish stone in the middle. That stone is what you want. In order to get it, you'll need to bounce off the jewels on the edges of the square enough times so that they disappear. (I think it takes three times for each jewel.) After you create a hole, bounce into the middle and grab the jewel.

WickedDeathgood call on the save. If you mess up breaking in to the emerald you can just load instead of going in and out of the title screen.

Make sure that by the end of the first or second part of a world you have 50 or more rings. At the end when you hit the Robotnik sign, jump to get into the giant ring. In the bonus level, look for a semi-transparent group of red & white balls and get past them to go inside the secret area. Once inside, look for a group of gray jewels and keep touching them. As long as you touch them, they'll turn into different colors then disappear, eventually giving you access to the Chaos Emerald.
