  I did it on Stage 5-1 "Pearl Clam" with the flipper ability. If you get the ability on the first ball it is basically impossible to loose the ball.
  
  Hold the button down so the flippers are up and the ball can't fall through to the bottom. And the pegs don't disappear so just keep flipping it around until you get the 3 point multiplier.
  
  I got it first time after i realised this could happen.

  The way I did this was to quick play a map and pick the multi ball mole. You gotta get pretty lucky on it but if you can hit enough pegs to earn a free ball and then catch the original ball and the multi ball, you'll catch the achievement. Took a few tries but the first few levels that are relatively open with lots of pegs for the balls to bounce around on work well.

  I'll add that it helps your chances if you're able to hit both of the multiball pegs on the same shot. Then you only have to catch 2 of 3 in the bucket, and your chances of having a free ball from a high score are better too.

  I did it by using the flipper ability on the first level that you get the flippers. It's pretty easy to keep the ball alive and hit a lot of the pegs with one of your earlier shots. I was able to get 3 free balls just off of the score (125,000 points). I imagine that it would be pretty easy to get 2 free balls with points and then hold the ball on one of the flippers until the free ball bucket comes down and roll it in there.
