Like a few of the achievements on WSC Real 2009 the description "Play 40 or more games in pool championship mode" is a bit misleading. You must WIN 40 matches of pool in Pool Championship mode.
Select 8 Ball Season from the main menu and you will enter the UK 8 Ball Championship. This is a knock-out tournament consisting of 4 rounds.
1st Round is best of 1 frame.
2nd Round is best of 3 frames.
3rd Round is best of 5 frames and...
4th Round is best of 7 frames.
So if you go all the way and win this tournament that will be 4 WINS towards your achievement.
It's a tight call whether winning the 1st round and losing the 2nd round, then rinse and repeat is quicker than going for the whole tournament, but i found it slightly less boring going for the big win. It took on average 20-25 mins to win the whole tournament (including load up times).
Unfortunately, there are no other tournaments after you win this in Pool Championship mode so you just play it over and over.
10 tournaments = 40 wins and achievement.

Good luck

EDIT: As you may see from the comments belowe it seems that it is quicker to start a new season to get the achievement. Credit to the guys below.
