TheBoxyBearMuch easier method: There's an orphan child with green robes you can adopt in Whiterun. Just buy the Whiterun house and the child bedroom before talking to her.

UGotta Check ItObviously, you still need to purchase and construct all the homes for other achievements, but I did that and when I asked Sophie about her parents and adoption, my character only mentioned the home in Whiterun. So I assume as long as you furnish your home in Whiterun with the 2nd bedroom, you can do this without the house building.

planchetflawI can't speak to Sofie for some reason. When I press E she just says Hey or Need Something? But no dialogue options come up for me to click.

Edit: A number of closed and reloaded games later (and an additional 5 hours) (same save state) and she's talking properly to me and I adopted her.
