Okay, I feel bad for doing that, so I will give a real beginning tip: you need to leave the opening starting screen by leaving through the left of the screen first (not right; you'll go that way later).
Bonus starting tips: the bow's arrows bounce off metal surfaces, allowing access to new areas once you get it... and equipping the red or blue spirit allows you to pass through the red or blue swirling barriers for further access to new areas.
