Restart the event until you get the inside lane. You will have less distance to skate. Try to get a good start, but don't get disqualified. It would take a lot of time to get out of the event and back in and it is not worth it.

If people are having problems with the timing of the A button, it is because they don't know the ultimate secret. Go into first-person view (press B). Since you don't see your skates, there is a Rock Band-style meter that shows when to press. It is ten times easier this way.

Don't be surprised once there is 5 turns remaining, you will go into sprint. That means you have to press the A button, like in the 500m, to gain/keep your speed.

The AI is horrible at this event. As long as you don't lose too much speed, you will end way before the opponents. It is not uncommon to lap the 2nd place opponent.
