EDIT: playing in Arcade mode rather than Xbox 360 mode results in greatly increased slowdown when there are a lot of bullets and/or point items on screen and makes this achievement considerably easier. I have been practicing recently for a 300m run in Arcade mode and I'm scoring much higher in most levels, particularly the Forest.

EDIT 2: I finally got the 300m achievement:

Check Shadykilla's 300m solution for some good scoring info. Note that 200m is possible in stages 1-6 as seen here in my failed 300m run:

I just got this achievement with Rosa. BARELY. After weeks of practice. My replay is included at the bottom of the solution.

For a detailed explanation of how the game works, refer to this forum post.

The basic gist of scoring involves knowing how to correctly kill enemies (shot, laser, or lock shot), when to best power up, and how to refill instantly. And you must do all of this on top of surviving, which is difficult enough in and of itself.

I started by studying replays to see what the top players did to get high scores. My initial plan was to try to mimic my friend's run with Follet where he reached 200m in the ballroom of Hades Castle right before Jitterbug, completed the game, and ended up with 213m.

I also reached out to Toxic Helg0r, who is a shmup master and clearly some sort of gaming savant. Helg0r suggested I try Rosa instead of Follett and recommended the path that I ended up following: Port Town, Graveyard, Forest, Volcano, Lake Shore, Swamp, and Hades Castle. I played Port Town and Swamp on lvl 2 to avoid suicide bullets.

I practiced each level individually in training mode. For weeks. It didn't take me long to get consistent with pretty much everything but the Forest. No matter how much I practiced, it was always a crapshoot. I still don't have a good understanding of exactly how to handle the later part of the level with multiple vines and floating islands. I could occasionally finish the level with 25m+ and a full item counter at the boss, but that was very rare. More often than not, I'd get hit while powered up, which is a run killer. Getting ~18-20m and having a full counter at the boss was good enough and what I was hoping for once I started real runs.

As for the 200m run itself, here's a general breakdown:

Port Town lvl 2: I just used this level to get 1000 items in the counter. Deathscythe's third form on lvl 3 gives me fits, so I just stuck with lvl 2 so I didn't get irritated on the first stage.

Graveyard lvl 3: My goal for this stage is 28-30m and to be at 1000 items after the boss.

Actual result at end of stage: 28.5m, 980 in counter.

Forest lvl 3: My goal for this stage is 20m (I have gotten 27m before, but that's extremely rare) and to be at 1000 items at the boss, powering up right before he dies.

Actual result at end of stage: ~19m and 1000 items at boss, powered up before he died.

Volcano: My goal for this stage is 70m and 500 in the counter after the boss. The trickiest part is the instant recharge halfway through which I actually pulled off successfully.

Actual result at end of stage: 70m, 560 in counter.

Lake Shore lvl 3: My goal for this stage is 18-20m and 600 in the counter after the boss.

Actual result at end of stage: 17m, 700 in counter. I lost a life at the boss, which was annoying.

Swamp lvl 2: My goal for this stage is 12m and 400 in the counter after the boss.

Actual result at end of stage: 12.5m, 400 in counter. I got a half life item from the car (putting me back to 4.5 lives), but I lost a life at the boss, which was EXTREMELY annoying.

Hades Castle: My goal is to start this stage with 150m. I was at 148.6m, which was close enough. I just needed to execute the stage correctly or, if a minor mistake was made, complete the game for the ending bonus. I certainly could reach 200m in the ballroom with proper execution.

I power up three times in this level: at the first big blue eyebat lasting until after the cow, at the first big red ogre lasting until just beyond the blue/green eyebats, and at the second ogre in the ballroom lasting until just after the second gargoyle in the ballroom. With proper execution, I can score 50m at this point.

I made it through the castle as planned with only a couple of very minor issues (not lock shotting the final ogre before the ballroom, for example). I got hit by a stray bullet from the final gargoyle and only had 194.4m and 3 lives as I reached Jitterbug, so I needed to complete the game to get the ending bonuses.

I struggled with Jitterbug and got hit twice. Ugh. The first time, I must have gotten too close and he fired a wave of bullets that I don't usually see him fire. The second time I was unable to avoid one of his "HUMPH" volleys. He died shortly after, though, and I was back up to 3 lives from the large cake.

The Tyrannosatan battle went well until the start of his 2nd phase, at which point I struggled to target him with lock shot, which was extremely annoying. It was only a minor issue as I had enough lives/bombs to defeat him. And my ending bonus was 8.45m, which put me over 200m and popped the achievement.

Final score: 204946187

Good luck!
