This is a very poorly worded description...you might think that you have to beat the "Whiplash and Mandarin" mode, or you might think you have to beat a Whiplash mode and a Mandarin mode in one game. Actually you have to beat all SIX Whiplash and Mandarin modes in one game, which is quite difficult. The modes are listed on the playfield right above the flippers; they flash when you're playing them, and light solid when you've defeated them. The modes, from (in my opinion) least to most difficult, are...

*WHIPLASH ATTACK: Hit any six lit lanes.Three random lanes are lit; every ten seconds, it's a different three lanes. This one's the easiest because if you're having trouble hitting what's lit, you can just wait a few seconds and you'll have better options. The "Science Award" ramp is the only lane that is never used in this mode. Oh, one other thing: after your sixth hit, Iron Man flies over to Whiplash to zap him; the mode isn't actually done until Iron Man lands again, even though you get the 5 million points for completing it...so be extra careful to not lose your ball until the mode is definitely over.
**EDIT #1** I forgot to mention, also during this mode Whiplash tries to hit the ball with his whip; if he succeeds, the ball appears to explode. But you immediately get a new one (it automatically fires from the plunger), so I don't think this particularly adds any difficulty. It's just kind of confusing when it happens.
**EDIT #2** Although draining the ball after getting awarded the 5M points doesn't light the "Whiplash Attack" light, it may still technically be considered completed. It appears to just be a bug related to the light. It's hard to be certain, though, so just don't lose the ball.
*MANDARIN'S IMPACT BEAM: You have to hit each of the six ramps and loops, one time each; then put the ball in the mission start hole. Very straightforward.
*WHIPLASH AND MANDARIN: First, hit both loops and the Science Award ramp; then some lit holes open up at the Stock Market and Party ramps. Get the ball into either of those to load the cannon. It takes three cannon hits to defeat Whiplash, one at the head, one at the body, and one between his legs. Try to fire when the cannon is partially covering the target, that worked for me. After the third successful cannon hit, Whiplash is defeated. Note that loading the cannon gives you 100,000 points, so if you suck with the cannon, at least you'll have a great score.
* MANDARIN'S ELECTRO BLAST: First you have to hit the left loop, the Stark Tower ramp, and the Science Award ramp...easy enough. Then you have 60 seconds to "recharge Iron Man's armor" -- there's a progress bar on the display -- by hitting the spinner and the bumpers. Left loop shots will hit the spinner really well and get more bumper action, so that's the way to go; if you hit the right loop, you might want to nudge the table when it reaches the top to make sure it gets at least some bumpers. (NOTE: If you're trying to get 10x bonus in order to get an Extra Ball, left loop shots during Electro Blast can get you a lot of progress.)
*MANDARIN'S FLAME BLAST: There's a 20-second timer. You have to hit each of the three targets in front of the mission-start hole; each hit resets the timer. After the third hit, send the ball into the mission start hole. Now holes open up in all the ramps and loops (except the Science Award ramp). Using the cannons, try to fire the ball into the lit hole (it lets you use the right cannon for the left loop, Stock Market ramp, and Stark Tower ramp; the left cannon for Party ramp and right loop). If you miss, you'll have to get it in with the flippers...that's a bit more difficult, since all the holes seem to spit the ball towards the left flipper, but the right flipper is the more useful one for most of these shots (and you can't send the ball up a ramp to get it to the right flipper, since they all have those holes in front of them).
* MANDARIN'S VORTEX BEAM: Four-ball multiball in which you have to hit every ramp and loop. The hard one for me is Science Award, since I'm too busy juggling balls near the drain to worry about whacking one just right with the upper-left flipper. This mode takes a lot of skill and a lot of luck. Hit all the lanes, and the mission-start hole opens up (hopefully -- it can glitch and stay closed, in which case you're doomed); periodically, a tornado pops up in the middle of the playfield to make it more difficult, but with a good solid shot you can still get a ball through that and into the mission-start hole. Try to get them all in there...I'm still not clear on how many have get in for you to win this mode. Usually by this point I'm down to two balls, and I know that only getting the first one in is not good enough. (NOTE: Thanks to Southpaw1977 for his comment. Drain all the balls immediately at the start of Vortex Beam, while the ball save is active, for a few free shots at the Science Award ramp. The first ball shoots out pretty fast but the second one tends to slow down a little just in time for the flipper.)

Individually, none of these are so bad, but trying to do all six in one game is really hard. Here are some general tips:

* Get the Tony Stark achievement first. That'll help you learn how to hit all the ramps and loops, and help you identify your problem areas.
* Always keep your kickbacks lit. I tried to light my kickbacks before starting any missions...they're especially necessary for "Whiplash and Mandarin" and "Mandarin's Flame Blast."
* If you have an opportunity to complete all six Tony Stark missions, take it. If you manage to then complete all the Iron Man missions, then you'll get a crack at the Ultimo achievement.
