"You can't go indefinitely....."

Tell that to Techland. They STILL released FREE DLC years after Dying Light was released......

Is that where you stopped reading and decided to comment?

They can't afford to invest time, money and other resources into developing content that they may never be able to legally release.

I don't recall any similar copyright claims towards the Dying Light franchise.

Why the f**k would you want to pursue a copyright claim relating to Friday the 13th. Just about the worst movies ever made. The shame of it.

"a legal claim [that] has been made which could affect all future Friday the 13th intellectual property."
i think the problem is important to block new content for a long time. (years?) someone take a veto or demand money for jason x, they do the best they can. but a studio can't live without make content.

I wish they had added achievements for the challenge mode. I hope they follow through with the dedicated servers, but sadly given the situation I could see them having to drop that before they got it going.

This sucks, although I guess it potentially removes it from my backlog, is that's any consolation. Hopefully the servers stay up for a while after this has settled.

A 78 year old man who is probably gonna be dead soon ruined this game and any potential new films we may of gotten because of a dispute about a movie from 1978. What the fuck took him so long to make this claim?
The law. It says that if you are a young, broke writer and you sell something you create some no talent piece of shit in a suit can spend 35 years making millions off it before you can re-negotiate due it's success.

Maybe if studio executives said "You know what we have made $500 million off this. No one was expecting it to be much of a success so we paid you based off of that but in hindsight maybe $3000 is not a fair deal. Let's talk about what would be fair based on what we know now." these things wouldn't happen.

It's easy to just blame the writer because you know who he is. That doesn't mean he has done anything wrong.

It's a shame this happened. Had my eye on it back when it was first announced (though the game's bad release put me off) and was hoping if more content/patches ironed out the rough spots I might gave it a whirl. Guess I'm sticking with DBD for my asymmetrical multiplayer fix for now.

This makes sense and idk why we thought any different when they announced the 'pause.'

This game had flaws, but it didnt deserve to be snubbed out just as it was trying to get its act right. Hopefully this lawsuit gets resolved and we can get future movies and games one day.

That was a good listen bud, thanks for sharing, although I think the point of getting Larry Zerner on on the podcast was to refrain from pointing fingers at who was at fault over this. So I didn't hear anything about any greedy jerks that you mentioned in your comment regarding this lawsuit. Are you referring to the Victor guy?
Yes, I am of course referring to Victor, the original screenplay writer for the first (and just the first) Friday the 13th movie.

Very unfortunate situation. Can't blame the developer at all either. If there's a chance this may not earn them any money moving forward, and might not be able to release anything they work on, you gotta move on.

The lawsuit is an excuse to abandon support because the devs are in over their head with this game. Anybody who has been paying attention to this game since the kickstarter went live is saying the same, because the lawsuit was going on back then too and ALL backers got an e-mail regarding the lawsuit guaranteeing that the game would be unaffected because the lawsuit only targets Friday the 13th related releases after July 2018.

Nothing has changed on the lawsuit front at all. There have been no new hearings or decisions rendered whatsoever. Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller are in dispute regarding the release of new Friday the 13th content going forward from July 2018, not anything previously released.

This is the devs pulling the plug because they're in over their head. The game has been plagued with issues since launch. They don't even have a QA team to test patches before deploying them and every patch and hotfix released thus far has broken 2 more things for every bug it fixed. They're completely incompetent at their jobs, the game has been getting crushed by the competition (Dead By Daylight), and their forums are overrun with people calling them out on how horrible a job they've done managing this game since launch. Dedicated servers have been promised since last July and still don't exist. Bugs that the game released with last May are still in the game to this day. They were caught red-handed selling backer-exclusive items (Savini Jason codes and counselor clothing codes) on ebay at a markup of $20 a piece from a North Carolina location (where their HQ is) for 8 months before somebody caught it, posted a huge thread about it that provided proof and blew up and was squashed by their moderators, and then suddenly after that thread started getting attention and people called bullshit on the mods shutting the threads on it down the seller abruptly closed their ebay shop.

This has nothing to do with the lawsuit and everything to do with Gun Media being complete scumbags, which is why they immediately threw the game and all of its DLC in to the STEAM summer sale for 50% off after they used the lawsuit excuse to bail on their obligations. They're desperate to cash in on one last heist before they fuck off with their profits and abandon the game. They're taking the money and running because the playerbase is dead, nobody streams it, they're too inexperienced to fix the issues that have been plaguing it since launch, and they can't deliver on half of the shit they've promised (dedicated servers, bug fixes, a new original Jason design, paranoia mode, more clothing packs, customizable cars, VR support, NES Jason revamp, play as a counselor in offline bots, integrated twitch support, the list is almost unending) over the last year.

Dedicated servers still don't exist. They say they're still coming. In 2-3 months time I bet almost anything that we'll get another "update" in which Wes says they can't be added either. They're only saying so now to try to lessen the blowback but in a few months when people aren't paying as much attention they'll come out with some bullshit about not having the funds to maintain them or blame the lawsuit again and those won't happen either. A lot of the content we've been promised has been finished since January (Uber Jason and the Grendel map and more emotes) and we have evidence of it from a Gun employee via twitter and youtube, but they haven't been released because it's loaded with bugs like everything else they create. They announced they were pulling support for the game 2 weeks before this article was even published and over a month before the actual July 18th deadline the lawsuit excuse references. They had over a month to iron out the final bugs and release the content they've been teasing us with since December but decided internally not to.

There are still people who backed this game who haven't gotten their physical copies of the game, their soundtrack, or their artbooks, FFS. That alone should tell you everything you need to know about how incompetent these devs are. That over a year after release there are still thousands of backers who still haven't gotten what they paid for.

Don't believe their bullshit and don't ever buy a game made by Gun Media ever again if you feel ripped off like most of us hardcore Friday the 13th fans do. And if you want more information regarding the timeline of broken promises and questionable decisions regarding this game, all the lies about promised content, and the discontinuation of support, check the game's official subreddit because people there have been cutting through Gun's bullshit for the past 8 months now. Because it's all too easy to blame the lawsuit if you haven't been following the game from its inception like I and the rest of the hardcore series fans have on official outlets. That's why this is such a genius excuse because it's going to placate every single person who hasn't been super invested in this game since it was called Slasher Volume 1 : Summer Camp, because lawsuits are scary things and most casual players of the game have no idea that this lawsuit has been in existence long before the game even released.

Consider yourself warned if you read this post and ever see another game developed by them for sale again.

Well... I am sure what he meant was "what is the point on investing time and (a lot of) money on content that possibly will never be allowed to be realeased?" You just don't want to burn money like that if you own a business.

Also, it's idiotic of anybody to blame Victor Miller for this. He's guaranteed the right to renegotiate his contract 35 years after selling the rights to the original movie to Sean Cunningham. Victor sent Sean a notice back in July of 2016 notifying him that he wanted to exercise his legal right to renegotiate his earning potential from the series and Cunningham counter-sued him instead of entering negotiations.

He was a writer-for-hire for the first film and came up with the character of Jason Voorhees (then named Josh) being a boy who drowned in a lake. He was paid like a few thousand bucks for his work and the series then went on to become a juggernaut that made who knows how much money. There would be no series whatsoever were it not for his contribution in the creation of the character of Jason.

Anybody saying that it's his fault is a fucking idiot because if they wrote a character for a few thousand bucks that then went on to make like a billion dollars in sequels, figures, games, etc... and the law said they could be entitled to more they'd file a lawsuit about it as soon as possible too. It's a great law and it enables artists a second-chance at financial compensation when they've been taken advantage of by greedy studios the way Victor and so many other talented writers and musicians have been in their careers.

The devs just want to scapegoat him because they'd rather he be taking the abuse from pissed off fans than themselves or Sean Cunningham, because they want to paint themselves as the good guys here when in reality they've been the bad guys from the moment the kickstarter goal was fulfilled.

This is some of the most ridiculous tinfoil hat crap I have ever seen. They had Uber Jason nearly completed and ready to release. They stopped development because they were forced to by the lawsuit. The greed of Victor Miller destroyed it. Period.

Also those Savini codes were stolen and sold by an employee of Limited Run Games. THEY WERE NOT being sold by Gun/Illfonic.

Whatever you say, dude. I'm really not interested in arguing with someone who didn't back the game or follow it for the last year who thinks that Victor Miller is at fault here when Sean Cunningham's counter-suit is the real issue for the series going forward. The lawsuit doesn't affect anything until July 18th, so if Uber Jason is "ready to release" then he could've been released at any time and still could up until that date. They've been working on him for 6 months and apparently still couldn't get it ready, which tells you all you need to know about them as developers, honestly.

And yeah, some dude stole like 10,000 backer-only codes from Gun and sold them on ebay without them knowing about it. And it was only a coincidence that he also happened to be located in the same city as Randy Greenback, the game's executive producer who stopped doing Friday night streams with fans on twitch when they started asking him about it in chat.

Seems legit.

I have been following the game very closely since it was first announced. I know all the in and outs and details. You are the one here that doesn't know jack shit.

Actually you don't know any of that. You have no idea what letters were sent to them. You don't know what their lawyers advised them to do. You are assuming without knowing a damn thing.

Yeah, actually a reddit user managed to all but conclusively prove not just that it was a Limited Run employee, but the exact employee it was. And also, yeah, it makes sense that as soon as Gun knew about the fraud seller on Ebay, they took action and had it taken down. And if I was Randy Greenback and I had a bunch of uninformed whiners coming into my stream to bitch and moan, I probably would not stream anymore either.

The reality is this: This game was a huge passion project for Wes, Randy, and Ronnie. It's not something that they would willingly stop working on. They were forced to, and that's just how it is.
